what don't you like about tufts?

Can someone really do that?? I mean going to a university in another country and taking classes there is something that I know about. Is it really possible to do an internship in that country alongside?? This sounds too good to be true. I did not know that a study abroad could have so many things.

Of course. Sonia (the gal I mentioned above) chose Shanghai, in part, because the internship was part of study abroad program. My understanding is under more typical study abroad options internships are much harder to get - travel and other programmatic create conflicts - but you can seek out programs designed to include internship or service components.

It’s unlikely that one study abroad program can give you everything, but you can set priorities and look for programs that meet what you want. Here’s the list of pre-approved study abroad programs run by non-Tufts entities: <a href=“Homepage | AS&E Students”>Homepage | AS&E Students; and here is the list run by Tufts: <a href=“Homepage | AS&E Students”>Homepage | AS&E Students; - there’s no shortage of options.

If an internship isn’t explicitly part of the program, it will be difficult to get one on your own. Student visas often (though not always) prohibit working.

How does the FA work when one is on a study abroad program? What if there is a program that’s not approved – can one appeal to get the credits to count? Does one take a leave of absence?

Yo, yoyoyoyoyoyoyo, F-- Tufts. It’s in the Medford/ Northern Somerville so there isn’t much around except for davis sq (which gets boring after a while). The campus isn’t very live. The academics are good but everything else seems boring. Idk, i grew in a city right next to Medford and I found the area to get very boring after a little bit. To each his own. In my opinion, F-- Boston, NYC baby, go to NYU or Columbia!

@andrew…
If you hate Tufts, why read this board? Makes no sense.
My D visited NYC, Columbia, and hated them. No grass. Tufts is one of her top choices right now, even if Medford is a bit quiet, its a 20 minute T ride to anywhere in the city.

Good luck in NYC though Andrew, and keep in mind different things for different people. No need to “diss” the school and city. Your point, that Medford is not as ‘happening’ as NYC is fine, but your presentation makes it seem juvenile.

Andrew, you’re pretty much a tool. I also couldn’t disagree with you more. There’s more than enough stuff going on on campus to keep people occupied, but there’s still plenty going on in Somerville and even more in Cambridge, Boston, and the rest of the surrounding area. In fact, I vastly prefer being in a slightly suburban environment to being directly in the city anyways. NYU has no campus!

Couldn’t speak to financial aid, but if you attend a program not on the pre-approved list, you must get syllabi, reading lists, etc., in to the study abroad office AHEAD OF TIME to be sure your credits will be counted. In either event, you do indeed take a leave of absence.

My S. only needs a few classes to graduate, so is hoping to take a leave of absence and semester abroad next fall. Don’t quote me 100% on this, but as I understand, if you’re doing a non-Tufts program, your Tufts FA will not carry over, but federal aid will.

Another thing to be aware of if you’re interested in the UK and don’t want to tear yourself away from Tufts for a whole year-- the Fall semester in UK schools is short – a few weeks too short for Tufts requirements – so plan ahead for a spring semester.

Yes, I too was wondering about what countingdown said. Thanks Snarf.

Financial aid: If you do a Tufts program, FA works exactly the same as if you were still on campus. There is NO CHANGE. If you do a non-Tufts program, it’s sometimes possible to secure scholarships, but you should not count on that as they aren’t super-common. However, as you may be aware, higher education in the U.S. tends to be more expensive - by quite a margin - than universities abroad. Frequently, even those on significant FA find it within their limits to do a program in a country where the costs are reduced.

And, because we were JUST talking about Econ majors studying abroad, here’s an e-mail I got this morning. It’s long, but topical.

Wow. Study Abroad sounds awesome. I am falling in love with Tufts more and more everyday :slight_smile: :slight_smile: Thanks for sharing the letter with us Dan.

I would love to study abroad. Unfortunately, being in an accelerated/combined degree program and being a bio major makes that impossible to do so…
