What Ethnic Group am I?

What ethnic group would a Persian (from Iran) fall under? Other?

I know Ortiz is from the DR. What I’m saying is put him, Richardson, and Diaz together, and tell me what is the similar characteristic that brands them as Hispanic.

Heerad, Iran = Caucasian.

Ah, the good old ā€œCaucasianā€ umbrella. From England to Egypt, as they might say.

I don’t think Portuguese are hispanics… You are white/caucasian for sure if your origination is Europe

So spark15, the Spanish aren’t hispanic?

Hispanic is not a race, spark. It means ā€œSpanish Speaker.ā€ That includes everyone from the mestizos of Mexico to the Castilians of Spain.

I did not mention Spanish… Spanish might be are Hispanics but Portuguese are not

That is correct.

I think a lot of us are confused about what ethnicity the OP is…since he wasn’t very clear… a lot of people are giving very different answers and that wouldn’t happen unless we were all clear on what ethnicity the OP exactly was.

so are you part-Portuguese and part-Spanish/other hispanic,

or are you part-Portuguese and part-Caucasian?

Plus, this is optional section and you not only do not have to complete it, but also can be inaccurate up to certain degree. They are not going to say ā€œOH no!!! this applicant has 4.0 GPA and 2400 SAT but mis-identified his/her ethnicity! We have to reject this person!ā€

CHECK THE FREAKIN OTHER BOX AND PUT PORTUGUEES. Haha.

to ihavenolife:

The OP has clearly stated that he is just Portuguese
he said ā€œUnder what category do Portuguese fall under? I have have been going to all different kinds of places trying to get definitions for Hispanic/Latino and Caucasian, yet I seem never to get a straight answer. What ethnic group should I put down on my apps?ā€

So he is NOT hispanic…i cannot believe someone who is Portuguese himself did not know that Portugal was not a hispanic country.

Moreover, to quote Washdad:
"Yeah, I would disagree. For the purposes of college admissions Portuguese == Spanish == URM. Go for ā€œHispanic.ā€

OK…lemme clear things up for some people like washdad.

Fact #1: Portugal and Spain are different countries
Fact #2: People in Portugal speak Portuguese
Fact #3: People in Spain speak Spanish

Conclusion: Portuguese does not = Spanish

He/she is Lusitanic. I’ve already stated this, but it seems to have been overlooked.

Why say Lusitanic when you can just easily say Portuguese and be a lot more specific?

I wasn’t discouraging him from selecting Portuguese, I was merely stating that he is evidently not Hispanic and indeed Lusitanic.

fasteddie Spanish and Portuguese are very similar though… they should be considered as dialects of each other

really? then why haven’t I heard the Portuguese and Spanish people officially recognize both their languages as just dialects? I guess they don’t know their own languages, since we Americans know everything right?

haha dialects?? what??? so then i guess italians should be considered hispanic too, since their language is so similar…and maybe frenchmen and romanians. i they are all romance languages, so i get the point, but cmon…romanian is not spanish and neither is portuguese.

also, a Castillian being considered ā€œhispanicā€ is marginal at best since they are hardly an ā€œunderrepresented minorityā€ alongside a Frenchman or an italian. i mean hispanic should refer to those subjugated by the Spanish in south America. but that’s not my business…
