Disney movies ~ my 19yr son has said I’ve curtailed his cultural references. Since he had an older sister (and her friends around), I guess I protected him from an environment I thought might be too girly. So, I guess I never had him watch Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, etc. In high school for an English writing assignment, he was at a disadvantage. The themes are so well known, the teacher assumed the students were familiar with the Disney classics.

^ and frankly I was still trying to decide if the themes were what I wanted for my daughter to absorb.

I’ve lightened up.

So now you have a list of the 1,000 most iconic movies that HS and college kids should see over the semester break. Fill their stockings with popcorn and candy.

Although I think it was originally a made-for-TV movie (from the early 70’s, I think), I would add Brian’s Song to the list, especially for the kids. There was a remake, but I haven’t seen it.

Good Will Hunting
Rocky Horror Picture Show

I haven’t seen half these movies, & at 56, Ive had a lot more time to see them ( or do something else), than a college student.

Re Disney movies for example, Id much rather watch Cocteau’s version of Beauty & the Beast, which is what the Disney movie was based on.

Rushmore by Wes Anderson (a genius)

Quote from the movie: “I am applying to Oxford and The Sorbonne. Harvard is my safety school.”

Do the Right Thing by Spike Lee.

I hate the way Disney movies have become all about princesses - they weren’t that way when I was growing up! The only one that I remember watching with the kids (and that we owned) was Pinocchio. I do agree that they at least some of the classics are iconic and one should at least have seen an early Micky Mouse, Snow White and Fantasia. My younger son saw Dumbo with friends in high school and swears it’s all about drugs. The elephants on parade scene is pretty amazing! [Dumbo - Pink Elephants On Parade - YouTube](<a href=“Dumbo - Pink Elephants On Parade - YouTube”>Dumbo - Pink Elephants On Parade - YouTube)

*Rushmore by Wes Anderson (a genius)

Quote from the movie: “I am applying to Oxford and The Sorbonne. Harvard is my safety school.”*

HAHAHA! I loved that movie.

Mathmom, Pinocchio gave me nightmares as a kid. I was scared I was going to turn into a donkey although I was a girl and not at all mischievous. As a little girl I wanted to be a princess and live happily ever after. I guess many feel that way that’s why there’s a lot of fascination over Prince William and Kate.

It is refreshing to see movies where there is a strong female lead like Aliens, The Terminator and Hunger Games.

A little known movie I loved when I saw as a younger girl was Wish You Were Here, with Emily Lloyd. It touched me so deeply and I could relate so much to her back then.

I’ve recently rewatched it, now a mother, some 30 years later, and although I still am incredibly moved by the main character, the Mama Bear has come out in me, wanting to protect her from the horrible things that happened to her in the movie. It was shocking to me that I did not see those things on my first viewings, and how age and experience can open our eyes to what’s right there in front of us.

Bond, James Bond with Sean, with Sean

Good Luck Charlie

It has a Yale interview session.

Okay - Here are pages 1-5. I also added memorable quotes
(if could rememorable them). Now I want dinner, so someone else
can take the next five.

2001: A Space Odyssey I’m sorry, Dave. I’m afraid I can’t do that.

I’m a high school senior, and I LOVE old movies. My dad is very into “quality” films, and as I refuse to see the Godfather, which he says is the best movie of all time, he gave me Casablanca instead. Freaking awesome movie.
Of the movies on expatCanuck’s list, I’ve seen
Arsenic and Old Lace
Birds, the
Blazing Saddles (at least, parts of it)
Bringing Up Baby
Casablanca (freaking AMAZING)
Citizen Kane (ditto)
Fantasia (but it was when I was little and I didn’t like it… should really revisit it)
Fellowship of the Ring, the (Idunno, I love the book but the movie didn’t do it for me.)
Finding Nemo
(Godfather II, the
Godfather III, the
Godfather, the)- if I haven’t seen these, it’s not my dad’s fault… I include them because if he’d had his way I’d’ve seen them twenty times by now.
Great Escape, the (Oh. My. Gosh. SADDEST movie ever. WATCH IT NOW.)
Harry Potter … (saw the first, third and sixth… about eight hours I’ll never get back)
It Happened One Night
North by Northwest
Princess Bride, the (this will always be my favorite movie of all time)
Psycho
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Rear Window
Sound of Music
Star Wars
Take the Money and Run
Third Man, the
To Kill a Mockingbird (again, I love the book but not the movie- as I believe I’m the only person in the universe with that opinion, I’ll shut up now)
Toy Story
Twilight Zone (the show, not the movie…)
Usual Suspects, the
Wall-E
Wizard of Oz, the
Some of these are some of my favorite movies ever.
Some faves not on the list:
12 Angry Men
Stalag 17
Up
The 39 Steps
The Incredibles
Monsters Inc (okay then, anything by Pixar except Cars)
Mary Poppins (shh! stop it! stop laughing!)

I don’t know who came up with the stupid idea that teens don’t like old movies. My sister, who is a chick-lit kind of girl (which I most certainly am not), loves Casablanca just as much as I do- we just love it for different reasons. They are just fantastic movies

If I could make only one suggestion for my fellow teens, it would be hard, but it would have to be The Great Escape. Dedicated to the fifty. You’re crying before it even starts.

Enemy Mine

ExpatCanuck you can have different numbers of posts per page? What post no was your last?

expatCanuck, thank you for taking the time to create a sorted list.

Whateverchan, I liked Enter the Dragon and my H probably agrees with you that is the best movie for the genre. I prefer Crouching Tiger though.
