What iconic movies should our High school & college kids be sure to see?

One flew over the Cuckoos Nest, Catch 22, The Graduate!

The American President (Michael Douglas) is a widower, who because of his position is reluctant to resume dating. Annette Bening is a lobbyist. The President invites Ms. Bening to a state dinner for the President of France. The problem is that nobody speaks French and the President (of France) and his wife are bored to tears. Ms. Bening notices the problem and immediately engages the President of France and his wife in a lively conversation thereby saving Michael Douglas from an embarrassing political faux pas. That’s when he puts his hand on her shoulder and says “My date”.

So it is sort of shorthand for “This person is with me and I am proud of what they just did”.

So it may be okay that my son spends so much time watching movies? ;)

There’s a great ‘backstory’ on the When Harry Met Sally quote “I’ll have what she’s having.” According to Billy Crystal, he and Meg Ryan came up with the idea of having a fake orgasm in public and ran it by the Director Rob Reiner. He liked it and they decided to work it into the diner scene. But during the rehearsals Meg Ryan was not as loud as Rob Reiner wanted, so he sat down at the booth and had a fake orgasm that Billy Crystal said “would have done King Kong proud.” He then went over to talk to Billy Crystal and told him that he was sooooo embarrassed. Crystal assumed that it had to do with how Meg Ryan would react to the direction. But Rob Reiner said that he just faked an orgasm in front of his mother - his mother is the woman who says “I’ll have what she’s having”.

Yes to the above, especially Fiddler which has some of the most singable songs ever written.

I’ll add Cabaret, a different breed of musical. The song Tomorrow Belongs to Me still send chills down my spine, not just the singing, which is amazing, but faces of the singer and especially of the audience. It’s a good example for young people to see how evil can be made so appealing.
