What is a Fireplace worth to You?

We burned wood in our fireplace for years. Ten years ago we switched to ventless gas logs. Love them. We have enjoyed flipping the switch and having instant heat and no mess.

Two years ago we built our future retirement (and present day vacation) home, a cabin like house on a river. This house doesn’t have a fireplace but we have enjoyed our gas logs so much that we had a gas line put in and bought the cutest ventfree gas stove for our family room there. It puts out tons of heat and takes up very little space. While shopping for it, I noticed stores showed the option of having a small gas stove sit inside a fireplace. It looked nice. The fireplace doesn’t have to be in working order. It’s just a stove holder. Instant heat and ambiance.

We just did major work to the foundation of our beach house and took down the chimney, as the mortar was crumbling (the suspicion is beach sand was used and it decays over time). We left the mantle in place, however the fireplace box has been sealed off.
