Thanks, @jonri, That looks like a good resource to use once we get closer to wanting to sell things. The free informal appraisal is just what I am looking for. Most of the stuff I do have an idea of the origin. But there is one huge secretary type thing (that came from another grandfather of H who was German and we were told it is possibly German). But it is very large and I don’t think either son would want it. As @someone says, some of this is generational in terms of what people seem to want these days. I’ll bet your Doyle suggestion might be helpful to others following this thread. Thanks to all for all the good suggestions.
I’ve used Value My Stuff to get information and value of some things I inherited. When I googled it just now it seems available in the US - I used the Brit site but I imagine they’ve just expanded. Thought it was pretty useful - you send them 20 or so pictures of the the object you want to be valued and within about 48 hours you get a paragraph or two of information and a monetary value. They have also started to have online sales but I haven’t investigated that yet.
Good to know you’ve used that @Onetogo2 . I did see that when I was googling around and thought that might be something to consider using. You can get one appraisal for $15 or 10 for $100 so seem like a possible good idea. Thanks.
I thought this was an interesting article and highlights some things a lot of us will probably be facing when we try to downsize. More recent generations tend to be more mobile and another factor in this could relate to young people not wanting to drag big heavy pieces all over the place! http://www.wsj.com/articles/why-the-market-for-heirloom-and-secondhand-furniture-has-disappeared-1404256129
