Part 1 is optional. It consist of info such as name, address, etc. You may enter your SAT/ACT scores if you wish, but it is fine to leave that blank if you have more testing to complete. You may enter a major, or just put “undecided.” If you put a major it is FINE to put an entirely diffferent major on your Part 2 application which, as you say, is not due until 12/1/10.

The benefit if Part 1 is that is saves you $15 overall on your application fee:

Part 1 = $10, Part 2 (if you did #1) = $40 for a total of $50

Part 2 alone: $65

There was a problem with the website last night and this morning, so the deadline for Part 1 has been extended to October 18th. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-southern-california/1014713-usconnect-login-problems.html

If you feel it is likely that you will apply to USC, you might as well do Part 1 and save the $15.

Good luck!
