I was aware that my post would sound elitist, and, frankly, it was intended to be provocative. My sense is that OP needs to get his/her game up to a higher level to have a shot at Harvard or the other Ivies. And my last comment, snarky as it may sound, was intended to say its really important for OP, or anyone thinking about Harvard, to get clear about what s/he really wants from a college.

I know Harvard pretty well from the inside; I figure its good to be honest if I think someone is on the wrong track but doesnt know it.

when you think about how good the elite US universities are compared to the rest of the world, you get a sense of how incredible any ivy is, from an academic point of view. I believe these rankings focus on research productivity- and not the quality of undergraduate education. Tsinghua and Peking in China and the top Grandes Ecoles in France generally produce more accomplished students than ivy BA grads.

Cornell is known for the diversity of its offerings ,the variety of the fields represented within its seven undergraduate colleges, graduate & professional schools. It is New York State’s land grant college, and offers study in a number of specialized and applied fields, above and beyond the traditional liberal arts disciplines, that are not represented at these other universities. Only 1/3 of its undergads are matriculated in its College of Arts & Sciences, whereas such students range from most to all at these other universities. Three of its undergrad colleges (and the vet school) receive significant funding from New York State, and in-state students at these colleges receive subsidized tuition. It has the largest undergrad student body of this set of universities.

Some of its stronger particular programs include: sciences and engineering, various areas of the humanities, such as english, literature, languages and creative writing; architecture, landscape architecture, veterinary medicine, agriculture, human development, labor relations, and hotel administration. The sciences are strong generally, some noteworthy particular sub-areas include : physics, chemistry, astronomy, applied & engineering physics, materials science, operations research, computer science, nanotechnology, statistics, ecology & evolutionary biology. The undergraduate business program, and masters financial engineering program, have raised their profiles significantly in recent years.
