New Haven is actually relatively tame compared to NYC, IMO. It’s nothing to worry about unless you’re the kind of person who cowers and crosses the street if they see a homeless person on the sidewalk.

I’m not so sure about that. NYC has cleaned up a lot. Yale is nice - on campus- but the surrounding area isn’t Princeton, NJ.

@mistofthekane: already on that! if you look closely before some of the scenes at Yale in season 4 they flash a screen shot of the outside of Durfee at the real Yale, it’s a rare treat! haha

okay, but on a real note, basically New Haven is the least of anyone’s worries despite that it’s not a glamorous city so I think this thread is kaput, we’ve established the various temperaments New Haven has to offer and everyone is now well informed. good night, and good luck!

(The first Gilmore Girls episode to supposedly take place at Yale, when Rory visited it with her grandfather, was filmed at Pomona. There are palm trees in the background of some shots. It doesn’t look much like Yale.)

Hey, well when Gossip Girl went to Yale they unabashedly at Columbia. Did NOTHING to hide this fact…ohhh gotta love it

What are the dates for Bulldog days?

I looked on the Yale calendar of events and it doesn’t say, but last year it was the third week in April, in the 20s basically and it corresponds with the average public high school’s April break

Bulldog Days will take place on April 22-24.

Oops, it’s April 20-22, Monday-Wednesday.

Hahaha yes, I expect my dorm room to look exactly like Rorys. You think they’ll allow my grandmother to put a plasma TV in there?

@JHS–No way? I just watched that episode recently! I’m sooo gonna watch it again to see if I can spot palm trees! haha.

Yeahhh I watched all the episodes of Rory’s first day at Yale this week haha! Lorelai actually mentioned that there was nothing to do in New Haven. Rory was like well, we’ll find something to do in New Haven while Grandma/Grandpa are at their dinner. and Lorelai was like …honey, have you BEEN to New Haven? And then they ended up finding a good taco place.

Gossip Girl at Columbia was SO not cool. It didn’t look anything like Yale. Not even close! If Blair gets into Yale…they better pick another location.

I hope I don’t meet a real-life Blair Waldorf at Yale… She’s cool on TV, but I couldn’t handle someone like that in real life.

We should be happy we’re not located in NYC or some other happening location (even though that would be amazing). This way, we’re not tempted to be crazy every night, which leads to a) dangerous situations or b) drainage of personal funds.

Going to put my two-cents in here and say that if Yale were in NYC I wouldn’t even apply, so I’m actually grateful that it’s in New Haven!

People pretty much hit it. The Yale campus is safe, and beautiful with its Gothic architecture. Plus, with the endowment they have, they are renovating every 5 minutes. Downtown New Haven has plenty of stuff. Night clubs, bars, restaurants of every ethnicity (not to mention the best pizza in America). Obviously, New Haven has the slums too, but what city doesn’t? It’d be foolish for someone to walk around in a ghetto at 3 in the morning by themselves. Don’t get caught up in the rumored reputation of New Haven as a ghetto town. It’s really cleaned itself up from the past.

Oh, one more thing everyone weary of New Haven should know—it kind of one-ups all other cities in the fact that it is the home of:
the frisbee (originally spelled frisbie after the pie shop called Frisbie Pie Company who’s tin pans Yale tossed as a game)
the cheeseburger
the first lollipop
the first public Holocaust memorial on American soil
and lastly,
Jim Morrison’s infamous arrest (the first time a rock start was ever arrested in concert)

Beat that!

@mistofthekane—Ah, well as long as I’m not on Blair’s bad side haha but yeah I get what you mean…that would be very tiring. Would love her clothes though!

Imagine having Paris as your roomate/classmate. I wouldn’t be able to stay sane

I’m gonna miss roaming around town at 3am then haha. Ohhh well, I’ll save my late-night roaming adventures for when I get home from college.

It’s the home of the cheeseburger and the lollipop? and all of those things? Nooooo way. That makes me love Yale/New Haven even more…

If you’ve grown up sheltered, in the suburbs and afraid of city life, or just in denial, then maybe New Haven isn’t the city for you. Don’t worry though. I’m sure there is another kid dying to take your place at Yale.

^Why do I sense you’re being condescending? It isn’t necessary…

Yeah…I get that feeling too.

Although he’s a New Yorker, so it’s in his blood to be hostile towards suburban kids.

Anyways, haven’t we established this about 3 times over? New Haven. Is. Fine. Don’t worry about it. End of story.

^LOL. I believe you. I haven’t expressed concern since Post #1!!!

New Haven is actually a lot like where I live in Michigan, so I’m not scared or view it as a negative. A couple of days ago, I had my Yale interview and my interviewer said that much of New Haven is actually safe but students should know it is a post-industrial city, very segragated, and a victim of a bit of urban decay.
