My family feels like what nmsciencemom said. I do love Rice but the cost is prohibitive. Has anyone had successful adjustments to a financial package? Or is the EFC a fixed expectation?

Its a big decision and there are no easy answers. It’s been our experience that Rice is always willing to listen to FA appeals but they are also pretty rigid. I think you can assume that Rice will always give you the COA - EFC - “student loans”. This is unlikely to change. DD will graduate this spring. Was it worth the sacrifice? For us: absolutely.

When you are thinking about costs remember that your child WILL graduate in four years. That’s not always true at State schools and an extra year can add significantly to your planned expenses.

@SchoolAdvice what made you choose Rice for Engineering? Are you happy at Rice? did you have any friends from back home/ how far away was your family? were you deciding between rice and other schools?
Sorry…just have major decisions to make soon…need all the help I can get. Thank you soooo much.
@tchaikconcerto I’ve had an unsuccessful one. Well to be fair, I didn’t formally send in an appeal, but I talked to a guy in the finaid office if there was anyway to help ease the burden on my family because Rice was still too expensive for us. His response? He said that I should be lucky I got in to begin with, but if Rice is too expensive why should he give me money if there’s somebody else willing to pay the money. He said I’m still free to make an appeal, but after the exchange, I felt that the appeal would’ve been unnecessary and a waste of time. Might try later, but with the low chance of it working, not on the top of my list of things to do.
