What is so great about the iphone?

I don’t have an Iphone, but I do have an itouch, and I absolutely despise the onscreen keyboard–I hit the wrong letters all the time, and I have tiny fingers. I assume it knows this is likely, because when you type in a password, it shows what each letter is for a moment before masking it. Ordinary keyboards don’t need to do that. I have a regular old cell with a real keyboard inside that is eons easier to use. So when and if I ever get a “smart” phone (big if), it has to have real buttons!

I second starbright. It does virtually everything I can think of other than make my morning coffee. I am addicted to mine, too. It is a pleasure to use, so intuitive. I much prefer the touchscreen over the Blackberry-style keyboards. I can run through Facebook or my work email in seconds when I’m standing in line or commuting or whatever.

tsdad, I have Nexus which uses Droid applications. I have no real complaints except the time it takes to find and learn how to use the applications! I don’t love the onscreen keyboard, but when I had a wing - I used the onscreen board all the time over the real one I also had. The difference was that the Wing came with a stylus. I do think Nexus could be a bit smarter about suggesting words. (It only does it alphabetically, old phone suggested from past patterns.)

I had a Motorola phone that had pretty good predictive text and you could add words to the dictionary- the LG phones are pretty bad in that way & I have to turn that feature off.

My Blackberry tour, has a ok keyboard ( similar to the Bold), but the touch phones besides the iphone have not so good keyboards in my experience.

A friend has the Android and she liked it- but now she is having problems- however, Verizon replaced my Blackberry right away when I finally asked them to ( it had completely stopped working), which was great.
( However Blackberry/RIM has had a few probs with their web service- beyond Verizon problems)

I priced out the monthly costs for the three of us to use iPhones. Pretty pricey; $200.00 a month or so. I’m spending $130+/- now for our Sprint non-smartphones. I have dropped my land line so that saves about $35.00 a month. Still need to price out the Android phones on Sprint and Verizon.

I have an iphone. After the first month I can tell you it is substantially easier to dial than the HTC Tilt it replaces. It will never be my preferred wifi device and I will still lug around my laptop on trips.

I bought it solely as an emergency back-up to my crappy home internet here on the ranch.

I can see some utility as a toy, it works well for emails, short web searchs, cc is pretty good, as is another board I frequent, but anything else is adequate at best.

It is more intuitive than most and I have even sent photos!! I can’t even do that on my home computer as I never bothered to learn. iphone? You just hit a button.

Now my kid can make hers do the polka.

All in all, I’m pleased.

We have ATT but only my daughter has the I-phone. We pay her basic charges but she has to pay the extra $30/month. She is thinking of selling the phone to her brother because she can’t really afford the $30. On the other hand, she says she can’t live w/o it. BTW we are in Ventura County an hour north of LA and have great service.

I think I am going to finally do it. Buy an IPhone. Do I need to spend the extra 100 for the 3GS?
Also how well does the GPS work. I am renting a car in Indianapolis and driving to Purdue. I usually rent the GPS from the car rental company. Will the IPhone work just as well?
I am hoping with the IPhone I can leave a laptop at home.

GPS works just fine - I use it even when I am in a car with a build in GPS as I have the addresses already in my contacts database. One tip - always cut and paste the hotels / restaurants into your contact database. Then, when you are going somewhere, the address is just a click away in the GPS.

I’d get the 3GS - much faster surfing…

I don’t have an iPhone, but I do have one of the Android (Google) smart phones from TMobile. I don’t know how I survived without being able to access the internet from anywhere.

My friend with an iPhone wishes she had my phone because it has the same “smarts” but does some things a bit better (multiple applications can be open at the same time) and the TMobile plan is great.

A new one is coming out in June. I think I would wait for it. It’s going to be a little thinner and better.

My D got an iphone last summer just before moving to a different state to start med school. She used her phone for directions to get there, to find motels to stay in off the highway, and to find the way to her new apartment! She loves it.

JUST got my Motorola 3g Android through Verizon. LOVE IT. Fast and since I am in So. Cal, the Verizon coverage is great. I have not bought a new phone for over 5 years. I was watching a documentary on Afghanistan two weeks ago. In one scene a Pashtun gentleman in full beard, dirty turban, dressed in rags and surrounded by goats and rocks and nothing else, pulled out a better phone than I had…I knew it was time.
I got the “new every two” and combined it with their current “buy one get one free” deal. So H and I got new Androids for $50 each.

That is great-
:D

I’m on a Verizon family plan so I can’t speak to the iphone, but I purchased a Droid last week and so far I really like it. The GPS feature that “speaks” directions to you while you’re driving is great. I agree with the previous poster though that anyone thinking about getting a Droid should wait for the new model, which I’ve heard may be out before June. Also, if you have the option of going with either the Droid or iphone, you might want to keep in mind that - from what I’ve read - there are far more apps available for the iphone than for the Droid.

On a family plan so will be staying with ATT. Plus Verizon doesn’t work at my house.

musicamusica, that reminds me, I was on the subway the other day and across from me was a…gentleman who was extremely drunk, rank, filthy (the kind of filthy that changes your skin color), and was smelling up the entire subway car. I was just contemplating changing cars when he pulled out a cell phone that was newer than mine. Sigh. I need a new cell phone but am putting it off because I can’t deal with all the choices. I’m too cheap for a iPhone, not sure I even want to spring for a $35 data plan. I don’t really need a smart phone at all, although now that I’m getting dumber with old age, maybe my phone needs to get “smarter”.

Priceless! Nokia or Samsung or some other phone maker should use this guy in their commercials, “Is your phone better than his? If the answer is “no”, it is time for an upgrade!”

Or maybe that would just reflect prejudices about Afghanistan? For all we know, the guy could be a major player in the international opium trade, in which case he’d probably need a really good phone.

^Good point. And thanks for suggesting a great way to supplement my income. I need to start to pony up more cash for the $30/month wireless/internet fee. Goats in the front yard, poppies in the back.
