I know USNA has an overall acceptance rate of about 11%, but how much does that % increase if you get 1 nom? what about 2 noms?

Historically, offers of appointment are made to fully qualified (triple Q’d) candidates with nominations about 80% of the time.

Triple Q’d means that you’ve already been seen as qualified academically, medically and passed your CFA. For the class of 2013, with record numbers of applications, that may be somewhat less.

Go Navy!

BGO, USNA '07 dad, CDR USN (ret), USMMA '83 brother, University of South Carolina Navy ROTC '79

I saw that there were over 15k applicants this year at a presentation during CVW

The Naval Academy website posts those stats once the new class starts, for the class of 2012:

3,838 had a nom
2,196 were 3Q
1,537 offers of admissions

…here is the link for the class of 2012:

What does it take to be academically qualifed? SAT 1210

Actually, the term is scholastically qualified, not “academically” qualified, as it includes not only academics and SAT scores, but involvement and leadership in sports, clubs, employment, volunteering, musical talent, and other areas that do not involve academic achievement.

Which means that there are/were 659 fully qualified candidates (3Q’d) holding nominations that didn’t get an appointment.

nice analyses and summation

thats incredible! 15,000 applicants. phew… i sure feel lucky to have been accepted.

Wow, thank you very much everyone for those stats. I am triple qualified and I have 2 noms, so I hope I make it

You’ve come a long way, transforming very tough odds to the good. May your luck be even better. Go get 'em!

Class of 2012:
Applicants (includes nominees)…10,960
Number of applicants with an
official nomination… 3,838 (35 % nominated; 65 % rejected; 7122 rejected)

Class of 2011
Applicants (includes nominees) …12,003
Number of applicants with an
official nomination …3,827 (32% nominated; 68 % rejected; 8176 rejected)

Class of 2010
Applicants and Nominees
Applicants (includes nominees) …10,747
Number of applicants with an
official nomination … 3,751 (35% nominated; 65 % rejected; 7016 rejected)

As you can see from the data, candidates nominated tends to stay on the same interval, which is 3,750 to 3,850.

15, 000 applicants is definitely a lot of applicants.
But I am pretty sure that the number of nominated candidates will be close to the mean for the previous classes, which is about 3,805.

3805 is the normal mean of applicant receiving a nomination so for the class of 2013, about 11195 out of 15000 (75 % rejection rate) will not be receiving a nomination.

My point: The nomination process is a lot harder than the previous years. As soon as an applicant gets a nomination, the chances of receiving an appointment to the academy will be close to the normal rate.

Think about it, USNA’s acceptance rate this year was about the same as or less than Harvard’s. Harvard historically has about a 9% acceptance; USNA had 15,000 applicants and can only accept about 1200 each year because of size constraints => (1200/15000)*100 = 8%.

Wow.

Comparisons like this one are fun to ponder and can be ego-boosting for those in need.

Even more powerful in looking at these 2 institutions is the speculative reality that I’d bet my life savings on …

Way more USNA appointed Plebes-to-be would be admissable as Harvard frosh than Harvardians would be appointable Plebes. And even more impressive is that for the most part, neither student body would prefer to be @ the other. These are definitely not interchangeable parts. And for my money, the Bentley’s, Rolls, Beemers and Mercedes will be wearing dixie cups come July.

tuazee…

As I posted from the other forum where you also posted this data:

Your point may be well intended but is not necessarily accurate. The nomination process may not be any different than in previous years due to the fact you do not really know how the “application numbers” are generated.
