being a Canadian, I can tell you generally U of T is considered the Best in Canada followed closely by Queens ( in fact Queens is better in many respects), then maybe McGill, Western and UBC being somewhat equal. None of this has anything to do with the schools reputation in the US which is irrelevant. U of T topped the national rankings of universities here for the last 13 years and McGill is considered underfunded. U of T grad programs are second to none and I would argue are just as good and selective as any Ivy.

get a life ivyleager, everyone knows u hate McGill. And everyone knows those Torontians who got rejected by McGill try to attack McGill’s reputation. McGill is still considered to be the top though!!

“McGill, Western and UBC being somewhat equal.”

All you need to get into UBC from Canada is an average in the low 70s. And Western? Gimme a ****ing break. Everyone in Canada knows that Western is an easy party school (and before you even say it, yes, they have a good MBA program).

It’s reasonable to say that UofT is better than McGill (I disagree with Queens being better, because it lacks the strength that McGill has across many disciplines), but to put McGill on the same level as UBC and Western? WESTERN?!?! Everyone here knows it as the school for idiots.

Meanwhile, you say that UofT has topped the McLean’s rankings for the last 13 years. You left out the part where McGill has tied for number one as well in many of those years (this year being the most recent).

McGill only tied for one year that being this year. and my comments had to do with academics ( Western, UBC, and McGill) not selectivity. Western for instance also calls itself the Harvard of Canada. And Western and UBC have many programs that are stronger than McGill and vice versa. And McGill is severely under funded just as most universities in Quebec are. As for Queen’s it’s the most similar to an Ivy in terms of rigor and quality of education and community and has a very strong reputation in Canada. And just because they party at Western doesn’t mean it isn’t a serious school. They party on campus cause London is a dull town and there is nothing to do off campus.

I can’t believe the University of Waterloo has not yet garnered a mention in two pages of discussion of U of T, McGill and Queens.
To outsiders, yes McGill is internationally recognized (it has historically been Harvard’s “rival” school - but that has since become Yale . . .) but if you’re going into anything remotely related to Math, Com. Sci., Engineering, etc. then Waterloo is the way to go. Also, in the last fifteen years, 13/15 times Waterloo has been named Canada’s top comprehensive university:
<a href=“Macleans.ca - Canada’s magazine”>Macleans.ca - Canada’s magazine;

The point is not that Western “also” calls itself the Harvard of Canada.
The point is that McGill “IS CALLED” - by others - the Harvard of Canada.

And the point is also that McGill is the most selective, the one that most want to go, and the one most get rejected.

And the point is that McGill is always the “top” university in the most prestigious world ranking of universities - Times Higher Magazine.

I don’t understand why you Canadians are always trying to attack the only well-known university of your country.

I’ve applied to both schools, see my post regarding McGill though:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=144058

The university of Toronto always comes up as the number one in Canada (McLeans, Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s Academic Ranking of World Universities,…). McGill is an excellent school but UoT undeniably has the great funding and resources, as far as cons both schools have the problem of overpopulated classes (although maybe UoT moreso than McGill). So Waterloo is #1 in my heart. :)

“And just because they party at Western doesn’t mean it isn’t a serious school.”

Trust me…the people I know who have gone to Western are the kids who wanted to leave the province and couldn’t get in anywhere else. On top of that, they were ditzy and generally ignorant and stupid. At some point, selectivity drops so low that one must consider that the academics reflect the selectivity, and vice-versa.

Like I said, if you think UofT is the best school in Canada, fine, it’s certainly agreeable. But lowering McGill to Western’s status is like comparing the University of Michigan to Northeastern.

No way! Northeastern is an Ivy league!!

How does Royal Military College of Canada compare with West Point?

jpps1. i do see your point. Western is perhaps the only school in Canada that rich kids seem to drawn to in droves, some say they got in because of their parents genorisity to the school. And yes they are there to party. but overall the student body is still pretty large and there are many Western students who are quite serious. the school has a solid reputation if not over bloated by the Richard Ivey school.

McGill

U of Toronto

These seem like the clear top two, however i am not an expert on candian universities.

more like:

1) u of t
2) Queens
3) UBC
4) Mcgill

the top two are interchangeable i could see an argument for both and Ucchris I am probably more of an expert on canadian schools than you. Not that I am knocking your right to your opinion :)

More like

1) u of t
2) Mcgill
3) Queens
4) UBC

Now everybody chut up!

Here are some very good schools Americans should be considering in Canada instead of the usual suspects: St. Francis Xavier, Simon Fraser, the University of Alberta, Mount Allison, Acadia and Victoria. for business majors, take a look at Wifrid Laurier.

You all should take a look at these schools before choosing any of the others you’ve read about.

Well two male cadets got married to one another last summer. and their class mates and commanding officer threw them a big wedding party. Would that happen at West Point?

St. Francis Xavier = Best alumni rings

http://www.stfx.ca/xring/xring-means.htm

5-6 people I know are going there this year. Good school, very scenic and country-side, 'cept Antigonish is -really- in middle of no-where. :o)

Ok, let’s let the (beaver) fur fly…why does Canada even have a Royal Military College, or for that matter, a royal military?

I just want to point out that McGill is called the top party school in Canada, hence the whole Playboy thing. Google it if you dont know what I am talking about.

Toronto/McGill
UBC
Western
Queen’s
