What is the Emory crowd like?

I go to Emory, I haven’t really noticed a lot of preppy people. I’m from a very preppy, rich southern area so my view of preppy is sort of hardcore, not to sound annoying about it. By NO MEANS is Emory “very, very preppy”…look to Vanderbilt for that. Then compare the general Vanderbilt student body vs. Emory student body…you’ll see what I’m talking about.

School spirit? You’ve got to be kidding me… I mean yeah a lot of people at Emory like the school, but compare Emory to any other southern college with a football team and we’re a dead campus (i.e. Duke, UNC, UVa, Vanderbilt, all the major southern state schools).

And I agree with what others are saying. Emory students can be cliquey, but it’s not exclusive. The rich students aren’t going to look down upon other students, no one really cares what you wear, etc. However the minorities can be exclusively cliquey, especially the Korean internationals.

That’s the impression I get. I’m not saying I know the entire freshmen student body, but a LARGE majority of people I know came to Emory because they didn’t get into their top choice. Emory isn’t called the “Ivy-Reject school” for nothing. I’m not trying to bash on Emory, I really like it, I’m just being honest with my opinion.

This is going to sound discriminatory and I’ll probably get bashed for it, but after talking about with other Emory students, here’s my two cents:

A lot of the people who apply to Emory ED and REALLY want to go are Jewish and from NY (Long Island specifically) and Florida. They tend to like Emory more than the average student because it’s easier for them to find groups… they might think Emory is preppy because of the moderate amount of southern kids who go there :stuck_out_tongue:

The quiet majority is a mix of normal students. You can find your niche if you look hard enough (although some are easier to find, like the alternative crowd).

“Forced diversity” can also describe Emory. Emory boasts that its student body is very diverse, but the minorities tend to stick together and there isn’t a real meshing of the student body.
