*He said that a student should have a war chest of 8-10 thousand dollars to apply to medical school…$3,000 for application fees ($100 times 20-30 medical school applications) and 5-7 thousand dollars to travel to interviews that you would hopefully get. I was pretty shocked. *

Wow…good to know…

My friend’s son only applied to 5, got into 4 (including Yale). He got rejected by a mid-tier one for some odd reason. ???

I had no idea that a person should apply to 20-30. I think my H’s niece only applied to 3 (big mistake!!!). I thought 8-10 might be the right number. Now, I know.

If your MCAT is 33-35, you need 3.8+ GPA to have a 90% chance of admission if you are ‘White’ or ‘Asian’.

If you are ‘Black’ with that same MCAT score, you only need 3.2-3.4 GPA to have a 93% chance of admission.

With that 33-35 MCAT and a 3.2-3.4 GPA, if you are ‘Asian’ your chance is 51%, and ‘White’ it is 58%. *

Is this for privates AND publics? I can’t see publics being able to do this. I thought publics were supposed to be more color-blind because of law-suits and various court cases.

Exactly what I’ve been trying to say. I don’t know if you are the exception or the rule, but some of the SAT worship on this site is really over the top. Some kids just don’t give a c**p when they take the college entrance exams. Not everybody is on a steady program from kindergarten to med school with no detours, acceleration or deceleration.

I thought 20-30 med school applications was a bit overkill, but it is harder to get into medical school than into college. The kids of 3 friends applied to medical school recently. One kid only had one acceptance (to the military medical school) and I am not sure how many apps he put in. The other two (who only applied to 4 schools) did not get into any of them.

Sounds like it is still a tough road to get into med school…
