I am a student from China, and I did not study international courses, but I have a strong learning ability, and I got a good score in the college entrance examination in China. Because of family reasons, my family members really hope that I can come to the United States to receive better education, especially I hope to start my undergraduate study, so they can afford to pay the tuition fees. In addition, I personally think that my English ability is certainly not as good as that of native speakers. I am very worried that it will cause great trouble to my study. (My English level is IELTS 6.5) and I am very worried about the authenticity of this project.
Are you a student at UCLA? Or do other universities have similar courses because Iâm not a local student in the United States so I donât know.Is this possible? Because the teacher who applied for me said that he had students who had done this.
Because I am not a student in California, the school issued me I20 for this plan, so as to help me apply for the F1 visa.
May I ask if you mean that I may not be able to complete my undergraduate study in four years, or even get enough credits to enter ucla in the extension study?
You are limited in the number of UCLA transferable credits that you can take through the extension courses at 36 quarter units but you need 90 quarter credits minimum to transfer so you will need to attend a community college to make up the rest. You can transfer in 2 years and complete your degree in another 2 but the extension is not a stand alone program and there is no guarantee you will be admitted as a transfer.
You may not be able to obtain a student Visa just to attend the Extension program so that is something to research if you are International since the Extension program is not a degree accrediting program.
Do you need financial aid to attend college?
UCLA does not give financial aid to International students.
What do you intend to study?
Posters are trying to help you but you need to answer the questions posted in the above comments.
You are better off either taking a Gap year and applying as a Freshman applicant or attending a local community college with a well defined transfer pathway to UCLA and other 4 year universities.
The extension program does not offer Housing/Meal plans so you cannot live on-campus. Where do you plan to live while attending?
The program may have the UCLA name but you are not a UCLA undergraduate student.
This would be my suggestion also. It gives you time to actually research colleges that you can afford, and get an application in well before the deadline.
I personally think the UCLA extension is not what you should do.
I really do not think your teacher understands that this is not the way to get into UCLA. Otherwise, wouldnât the thousands of students who were rejected be doing this now?
The UCLA Extension is a completely separate department of the university. UCLA EXTENSION is called that because it is an âEXTENSIONâ of the regular university.
Extension courses are usually meant for professionals who already attended a university, or who are adults who want to learn something new for their careers/trades. My nephew took a course in becoming a state-certified construction building manager. He had already had experience in building hotels and homes, and was moving up, but wanted to learn more about the permit process and licensing within the state for construction. So he took a set of courses so that he could be eligible for State Exams in Construction Management.
As a new student, those UCLA EXTENSION courses may be at odd hours because people work during the day, and attend those courses in the evening. Course selections will be limited to what will be taught that term. The typical âacademicâ courses wont be available a majority of the time.
Where will you live? No one will guide you around the campus and you wont be able to live on campus because as an extension student, you are not allowed housing. It is limited to UCLA students.
You wont be considered a âregularâ student and your ID card will limit your access to UCLA campus buildings/activities because your ID is labeled as an EXTENSION student. Campus Security is a big issue now.
(Our son was admitted to UCLA via the normal channels. November is when the applications open. You can wait until November and apply. UCLA is very competitive and the chances are that you may be rejected.)
This is a list of what is required, as a new student to get into UCLA:
Academic Preparation
You must complete 15 A-G courses with at least 11 courses finished prior to the beginning of your last year of high school. To be competitive in the UCLA admission process, applicants should present an academic profile much stronger than any minimum UC admission requirements. See below for a listing of the A-G requirements:
- 2 years history/social science
- 4 years of college-preparatory English
- 3 years of mathematics (4 years recommended)
- 2 years of laboratory science (3 years recommended)
- 2 years of language other than English (3 years recommended)
- 1 year of visual and performing arts (if available)
- 1 year of college-preparatory elective
Keep in mind that there is no single academic path we expect all students to follow. However, competitive applicants earn high marks in the most rigorous curriculum available to them.
Each application for admission is reviewed within the context of courses available to that student. If a particular required subject is not available, weâll consider your application without it.
If you have missed any requirement, even if you attend the EXTENSION courses, you will not be admitted.
I am an international student, and financial assistance is not necessary for my family (except for the scholarship available). I plan to major in business or applied mathematics at the University of California, but eventually I hope to engage in finance. If this program is not possible, Can you ask me which school in California or in the United States is good in this area?
Thank you very much for the information you have provided me, but I know that it is very difficult for an international student to apply for UCLA. Maybe I will consider applying for other schools
There are many great schools for math and business.
UCLA does not have undergraduate business however.
We would have to understand your academic profile before recommending schools.
It sounds like your family can afford $100,00 a year for cost and fees?
You can go as low as in the 20 thousands but it might not be the prestigious name you seek.
Tell us about your gpa, standardized tests.
Besides a famous name what do you seek ? A large school or small school ? A big city or no city ? Warm or cold weather ?
I had a feeling the weather would be better in California, although I knew New York Business School might be a good choice. But as a matter of fact, since I am not an American student, I do not have a specific GPA, did not take the SAT, and only have some language scores (IELTS 6.5, Duolingo 120). I have no reputation requirements for the school. I only hope that the school can help me stand out in the future internship and teach me better financial knowledge. Itâs nice to have a group of like-minded friends and a school with some financial atmosphere
Iâll let others advise you who are more familiar with your test scores and international admissions.
Many can advise you financially. Internships as an international student will likely be very difficult but perhaps you can find one in your home country.
There should be no âmaybeâ about this at all. You havenât provided us with sufficient information to even gauge whether you are in the ballpark for UCLA admissions (very competitive and costly for international students) or any other college.
But the UCLA extension is NOT the way to start. A well crafted gap year would be a better choice, in my opinionâŠwith applications meeting the deadlines for enrollment fall 2025.
And where do you plan to work when you graduate? If you donât have a green card by that time, you will need a sponsor of some sort to get a job here. And some financial institutions wonât hire international students.
@Catcherinthetoast might have some advice about this career option for an international student.
What scholarships are you talking about?
Here are the UC course requirements and then specifics for your countryâs curriculum: Freshman: Additional information by country | UC Admissions
UCLA minimums on for Language scores: 7 or above on the IELTS, or a 120 or higher on the Duolingo English Test (DET).
UCLA admit rate for Internationals was 6.1% so you are a top student in your country?
