What is your favorite San Fran restaurant?

Wow, sorry about the Chinatown recommendation. I guess we were lucky. Have been to conferences in Tiburon and eaten in Servino’s several times. Pretty good food and a great view!

You weren’t off on your Chinatown recommendation as long as they stick to your full advice–look for places that are crowded. Don’t rationalize, “Well, it’s already 2 pm, everyone’s finished with lunch.” No crowd–you’re likely to have one of those “worst meals.” Crowd–it’ll be great.

Sorry, I don’t know Petaluma restaurants…
In San Anselmo, there is a popular “diner” type restaurant, Bubbas, that some people like.
Sausalito is a beautiful spot and has a number of restaurants of middling quality with wonderful views of SF and the Bay.
In SF, at the Ferry Building, there are a number of seafood places, including an excellent oyster bar (Hog Island); Hog Island oysters (in Tomales Bay) are probably the best in the Tomales Bay area (across the bay from Pt. Reyes), but there isn’t a nice spot to sit down and eat them…the area is known for its oysters. They have a fine oyster bar that features local and Washington oysters at Zuni (the chef at Zuni, Judy Rogers, has written a number of cookbooks; the place is quite famous, but it is casual too). Tadich has more of the typical SF type seafood and a great old SF atmosphere with excellent service – oysters Rockefeller, baby salmon grilled whole, etc., with SF “french bread” (the famous old SF sourdough bread has been overshadowed in recent years by the wonderful breads of Acme Baking Co. that originated in Berkeley, another Chez Panisse offshoot; you can visit the bakery in Berkeley next to Cafe Fanny (yet another Chez Panisse place, named after the Pagnol film and Alice Waters’s daughter, Fanny, now a Yale alumna) – Kermit Lynch wine store is there too – at San Pablo and Hopkins.)

Bethievt, I talked to a friend who has a place near Point Reyes. Manka’s burned down. The other places mentioned are fine. He said in Point Reyes, nothing beats the Pine Cone Diner for lunch.

Have fun.

If you get a chance, visit downtown Tiburon too. The views of downtown SF and the Golden Gate Bridge are fantastic.

Thanks dstark and mamenyu and everyone. Guess I hi-jacked but this is great info. We’ll have fun!
