San Diego

Job Prospects: Focused in Bio, biotech especially near UCSD. Engineering is also a very big deal here because of Qualcomm and other tech/communications companies. Jobs aren’t easy to get, but there are a great number of companies large and small. Law firms are also aplenty, though I wouldn’t imagine as many as in LA. One thing that is not huge here is finance.

Beach Prospects: Sometimes crowded in the summer, always great. There have been reports of dirty beaches, though in my dozen year experience living here that has not been the case. Surfing is one of the biggest sports here, skateboarding was invented here. Beaches are awesome.

Air Quality: Well I don’t have a pinpoint precise air-quality meter in my windpipe, but its certainly better than LA, and at least the cool, breezy famous SD weather seems to make things better.

Security: Depends. If you have a position at any one of the jobs I mentioned earlier, you’ll likely be living in a relatively safe neighborhood. Some places can be as well-kept as Irvine, some (particularly downtown and near the southern and eastern stretches of the county) are rather unsafe. Some places are notably better than Beverly Hills. It’s a mix, but its in general safer than your average U.S. big city.

Appreciation: Love it. And so do many here. It’s not like LA where every other person you see has a ****ed off mean look on his face (sorry LA i love visiting but living in most places in your county does not sound appealing to me), but it possesses many of the same big city opportunities. Amazing weather makes everythin good.
