aww…no free prints?..i was really excited when i visited davis and they said we get 10 free prints a day!! lols…i’m cheap

yeah, you’re right cr_book. i’m going to major in math too so i guess bringing a laptop during lectures to take notes won’t do me much. :T

I still say bring a laptop; it’s just so much more convenient on so many levels.

but i have a computer…and i’d rather not spend $700+

I’m gonna bring a desktop that I’m currently in the process of buying parts for to build, and a cheap, cheap laptop. I really don’t see myself doing very much with a laptop.

yeah, i take chanX’s view…if i do get one, i’ll spend < $500

I’m leaning toward a micro-ATX desktop with reasonable power, 20 - 22" LCD monitor, full size keyboard to the heavy work and then a cheap, lite and small laptop to do the low powered note taking etc in class, library, hanging out.

And since we’re on this topic…
Current SD students, what is the ratio of people you’ve observed to have…
- Laptop
- Desktop
- Both Desktop and laptop

Hey I’m an incoming student and am probably going to bring a labtop, just want to know are there any problems at UCSD with labtops being stolen? My bro went to UCSB and he said they(not himself personally, he had a PC) sometimes had problems with labtops being stolen…is this widespread at UCSD?

Over 95 percent have at least a laptop.

I haven’t really heard of anybody getting their laptop stolen.

It’s a good idea to buy a laptop cable lock to discourage thieves though. They’re pretty inexpensive and can be found at Circuit City, etc.

Is the cable lock mainly used for securing your laptop in the dorm room, or can it be used like at a study desk in the library when you need to take a break and go use the restroom?

Uhh…I would say it’s mainly for when you’re out studying, like in the library.

I don’t know anybody that locks their computer while their in their dorm haha

Just don’t leave it unattended in a public area and you’ll be fine.

The cable locks are often used in your room but could go with you elsewhere of course. Depending on where you’re staying and your roommates, there could be plenty of people in and out of the room so it’s not a bad idea to use a lock.
