What kinds of people SHOULDN'T go here?

Hmmmm…I’ve been on the campuses of Northwestern (it was for a shcolastic bowl meet, I swear), Harvard, Dartmouth, and Yale, and maybe it’s just the neighborhood not being uber-rich, but UChicago just does not give off that elitist vibe that the other places do (ESPECIALLY Northwestern). Chicago seemed to be to caught up in, I dunno I suppose it’s cliche but true, the Life of the Mind. Which as neverborn pointed out, is in and of itself just a different form of elitism, but hey, I’ll take intellectual elitism over snobbish designer clothes, mansion style elitism any day.

That’s great- cause after paying chicago’s tuition- none of will have enough for any of that!

Haha!! I already know what I’m getting for Christmas next year: college tuition…which is fine by me!

Ha! great idea! I can just imagine my letter:

Dear Santa:

I have been a very good girl this year. All I want for Christmas this year is $200,000. I promise not to spend it on chocolate, although I would enjoy $200,000 in chocolate. Put that on my list too.

Forever a Believer-
Rebecca

drummerdude: I also enjoy my designer clothes. /shrug

DannonWater -
be sure to leave cookies for santa and apples for the reindeer!

Neverborn, are u saying that the intellectually elitist attitude is not rampant and widespread? haha…

haha well I guess there’s nothing wrong with designer clothes manifestly, it’s just the stereotypical attitudes and personalities of some of the people who wear them

And that reminds me. I got no fin. aid from Chicago, and also got admitted to Gtown EA. On Christmas my dad was like “is it $50,000?” every time I opened a package. And yesterday I told my mom I was done with apps after completing Harvard and Yale. And she was like “wait, you haven’t applied to any you can afford!” Massive debt here we come!

So they’re letting you apply to all top schools are will you end up applying to a safety as well?

Oh- I always do. The trick is to spray the apples with lemon juice so they dont’ go brown before the squirrels- er- reindeer eat them.

Chicago seems big enough that there are your snobbish crowds and non-snobbish crowds.

I do enjoy my nicer clothing lol and I because ive been going to a Prep school since 5th grade, i could be caught wearing preppy clothing while going to school there lol

and, intellectual elitism “I’m smarter than you” I would think exists just as much or more at chicago than other top schools, but yes, it seems the less “I’m so much cooler/richer than you” elitism doesn’t exist there… though I think some of that is necessary for a school to have an interesting social scene, and even for there to be a lot of school spirit.

Does Chicago have a lot of spirit?

People for whom it is too much of a struggle financially or academically will not be happy. People who are indecisive, or want to dabble in a few fields for awhile may also have a problem, since there are few low intensity courses.

ummmm ok, concerning the last post, i have one question.

doesn’t the fact that uchicago has a core suggest that people can “dabble in a few fields for a while”? cos I’m really undecided, and really want to study many things at least in the first year. so may I “have a problem”?
thanks.

many students come into chicago with more than a few academic interests, and certainly the core helps students narrow down what fields they’re interested in. Most students don’t choose a major until second or third year.

Nearly all the humanities core classes touch upon English, philosophy, religion, anthropology, and art, while nearly all the social sciences cores touch upon sociology, psychology, philosophy, and economics. You’ll take the humanities sequence and probably the sosc sequence your first year, which will give you the opportunity to study many fields without committing yourself.

So no, no problem.

I think what was meant was more that’s it’s not easy to take “rocks for jocks” type classes where you “dabble” in topics without actually studying hardcore for them. Not that you can’t pursue multiple interests.

Hmm. Is UChicago really that bad for science/engineering types? They do manage two national laboratories after all. Only university in the nation to do so too. Yeah baby.

Are you crazy? it’s GREAT for science people. but horrible for engineering, because there IS no engineering program! There’s a difference between science people and engineering people.

oh yeah a big difference! uchic is a lil in/famous i think for not having an engineering school…a bit too non-theoretical heh

oh right. haha. feels dumb
