What major for career in Directing?

I am a junior in high school and very passionate about Musical Theatre. I am in a very competitive show choir, my high school has 2 musicals each year and I have been in all of them, and I have done regional/summer theatre since I was in the 5th grade). I LOVE to perform, and get good reviews in the “triple threat” arena…but my ultimate goal is to be a director. Is it best to audition for MT major, try my hand at “Broadway” first and then work my way into directing (or get a masters), or should I be gearing my education more toward that right now, say with a Theatre Production major?

I responded to your post under the UArts sub-forum.

I have a BFA in musical theatre, worked for quite a few years as a performer, then went on to get my MFA in directing. There are many different paths to a career as a director. This has been discussed quite a bit on the Theatre forum. I will look for these posts tomorrow and post the links over here. More tomorrow!

Above is a link to the discussion I was thinking of on the Theatre Forum… if you do a search of the forum, you will find smaller discussions about undergraduate directing on other threads…

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

Check out the Playwrights Horizons studio at NYU–it covers all aspects of theatre with a strong directing component but you still study acting, movement and tech classes as well. There is a MT track the third year there that is an option I believe.

Thank you both! I did start wading through the the giant Theatre thread, and had lready seen the discussion from KatMT…good stuff. Gives me alot to think about. That was kind of my original thought, that I should begin in MT, see how it goes as a performer and work my way into directing.

But all of this MT audition stuff seems so overwhelming and everyone is so incredibly plugged in and focused!! Although I have what I consider lots of experience compared to the kids I know personally, these postings make me feel really behind. I guess you’d say it is about raw talent, but I feel like a beauty-pagent contestant without a stylist…do I have a chance???

And truly, I could see myself directing lots of stuff…musical theatre is my first love, but I might also want to try commercials and maybe music videos and of course musicals for tv or movies. So I definitely think a more well-rounded LAC education (at a school with a good TV/film department also) seems a better fit than a specific MT degree.

But now I’m back to square one…what school is that? I’m bad at making sense out of curriculum pages…all colleges sell themselves as the best…I need you all to help me narrow down the list. Thanks for your suggestions so far.
