^^^^ Everyone is fabulous on the internet!
Playing tennis rather than pickleball.
(Sorry, it’s my pet peeve. More than once, we’ve been kicked off a tennis court for pickleball players. What the heck??)
Played tennis this evening. The men’s over 65 league came after us
Pickleball has changed my life! I love the exercise, the community(it’s very social), and the competition. I recently retired and am experiencing my second childhood, and it’s much better than my first!
I guess I’m old because I had to google pickleball. I’ve heard of pickle (played when a kid) and I know and have played platform tennis, paddleball, and definitely tennis but hadn’t heard of pickleball. When I googled images, it showed lots of old people playing, though.
Friend plays pickle ball. Also big on water aerobics and mall walking. And events at her condo social room. Not my cup of tea. Other friends play bingo at the senior center. Or chair exercise.
Compare that with the ones who do hundred mile hikes in Europe.
You can surrender to age or not. I’m not the exerciser many of you are, the treadmill or walking the dog is more it. The former cuz I can zone out (or go into mindfulness mode. )
I had to google pickleball too. Never heard of it. Looks like badminton, but much slower.
Slinging beers in the local dive bar this summer. Not sure it makes me feel younger as I wake up sore and exhausted the next morning lol but its great exercise and lots of laughs. I’m also a big Disney fan and going to the movies with all the kiddos makes me feel younger. Cannot wait for Christopher Robbin next week! It seems my friends are truly out of shape and stuck in their ways, making me feel younger all the time when I am with them. Some struggle at multiple sets of stairs, park at the closest spot and avoid exerting themselves at every opportunity…I, OTOH, make an effort to get whatever unplanned exercise I can by avoiding elevators, parking at the back of the lot, those sorts of things. Of course, its not tennis but …
Believe me, you WILL hear about pickleball in the future. It’s like a religion, and its adherents tell you it will change your life. If they would build their own courts, I wouldn’t mind, but they appropriate tennis courts and expect you to vacate for them. Grr.
I’m in the camp of doing things that make me feel young, but not things that make me look young. Despite copious exercise and reasonable eating, I am fat and will be. But I’m also fit, and that makes me happy. I’m also going mousy gray and don’t wear makeup, but I don’t associate those things with age. If others perceive me that way, that’s their issue. NOTE: this is not to denigrate other POVs. It’s just mine.
What makes me feel young:
-Participating in many online writing communities with writers half my age and getting most of their references.
-Keeping up with contemporary literature.
-Keeping up with contemporary music, especially alternative and alt. country.
-Kayaking!!!
-Biking!!!
-Going to concerts and standing throughout them.
-As someone else said, figuring things out–computer issues, travel plans, how things work in other countries, etc.
-Not being on any of the “old people” medications (bp, cholesterol, t2 diabeties, etc.) Okay, that was obnoxious, but it goes with being fit though fat.
-Watching goofy movies with my grown up kids.
-Keeping up with politics and world issues.
-Spending my working hours with college students
-Dancing.
^^^ Fantastic list @garland. Inspiring!
Exercise does seem to “top” many lists in one way or another. I think that says something to movement being refreshing for the body and mind.
I do feel a little sense that some seem to “knock” the efforts of others to put forth effort to be fit and do even moderate things to look what you yourself perceive as “good”.
@garland articulated very well how I feel. I am much more comfortable in my own skin now than ever before, and am embracing and enjoying this stage of my life. I guess I don’t feel old, so I don’t think about what I do to “feel younger.”
You can put four pickle ball courts in the space of one tennis court–our city has appropriated a few tennis courts to do so. Obviously a lot more people get to play. Pickle ball is a miniature version of tennis–or a big version of ping pong.
@MaineLonghorn, more pickleball courts are being built everywhere. The shared courts are not just a problem for the tennis players. There are way too many pickleball players for the available courts in many communities. And for those who googled and just saw old people playing, check out Ben Johns who is 19 and one of the best pickleball players in the world. He is studying engineering at University of Maryland and making money as a pickleball pro! Pickleball is being taught in many middle schools and high schools. It’s a great sport because it’s easy to learn and have fun, but it’s difficult to master so I’m consistently working to get better.
I am one of those no makeup women. And I never wanted to dye my hair. But I still have 2 younger kids and many of their friends’ moms are 10-15 years younger than I am. I was feeling/looking old with 2 white stripes in my light brown hair. My oldest son (now 30) talked me into dying my hair 4 years ago. All he said was, “Why don’t you dye your hair, Mom? Everyone else does.” (I think he wanted me to look like the me he used to know before he left for college 8 years before that.) I’m almost ashamed to admit how much younger it instantly made me feel. I do it myself and it is much easier/cheaper than I thought.
Here’s a new one: Menopause! Makes me feel like a kid again in some ways. There has been an up side to it.
We’re expecting our first grandchild this year, and that takes me back to when our children were born. Makes me feel young instead of old.
Maybe the pickleball discussion deserves its own thread. Can someone start a separate pickleball thread please. This one is getting derailed.
*edit- I started a pickleball thread. I don’t play but would love to hear more about it in that thread.
Visiting someone in a nursing home.
I find it heartening to read the number of positive and healthy posters on this thread! Am I the only one with midlife arthritic pain and mobility issues? I have always been told I look much younger than my age which used to really bother me 20 years ago, less so now. When we moved into our new house a few years ago when I was 50+ a neighbor brought by banana bread and asked me if I was the child or the parent (I thought she was nuts but I’ve heard similar comments before) but five years later I can’t go on runs anymore, and can only swim gently in a therapy pool. I color my hair and keep it long which is how I like it. I wear sunscreen and don’t wear makeup. I stretch, walk, swim and follow a healthy, mostly Greek-style diet. Even though I look young, I don’t always feel young, and will be following this thread for some tips.
visiting my 87 y/o mom helps
@cafe9999 sounds like you are doing many things to combat aging - and to keep you active!
I count my blessings to not have mobility problems so far. I know there are many people who do due to conditions beyond their control. That is also why it was important to me to start this thread AND to encourage people to think of other things (so many mentioned above!) that are not exercise related.
I think widening your world - in some way - is one general way to think about keeping a youthful feeling - because you are contributing and learning and hopefully doing something satisfying.
