What makes you ridiculously angry about the college admissions process?

pfft. These schools expect a qtr million from full pay families. Sorry but the $75 isn’t worth the admin expenses.

My point is that since they can’t remove the application fees, they could do it by putting more money into tuition, even though that will never happen. It is absurd just how much money Harvard has; an amount that they could never spend.

You’re complaining about Harvard? HYP and Stanford are the most generous schools extant. Or didn’t you know that? Yeah they’re filthy rich – and filthy generous too.

not generous enough. With the 1.whatever billion dollars they are sitting on, there is absolutely no excuse. This does not apply strictly to Harvard. This applies to every college in the country

…ok. As much as it pains me to repeat my ultra conservative relative: it’s amazing how free people advise how to spend others’ money.

Sheesh. Do you even know their fin aid policies?

Precious few colleges are sitting on billions of dollars, sad to say, and the ones that are have much of that money earmarked/legally tied up for many other things, such as research, maintenance of facilities, etc. They can’t just rob an endowment marked for some other purpose to fund financial aid programs. But, yes, I 100% concur with the frustration of many that college is too expensive for too many kids.

@Nedcone I have never and will never blame my heritage for anything: I’m very proud of it. I blame the atmosphere of political correctness that has led to this process of judging people based on the color of their skin, and not the content of their character, but not in the way MLK saw it. I see it as part of a dangerous trend in the United States of punishing success, because it makes the mediocre feel bad about themselves.

@BigB0ss people have literally been judged by the color of their skin since this nation’s founding, it has nothing to do with political correctness…this isn’t a novel idea, it’s reality. And there’s nothing PC about racial profiling, housing discrimination, racial empathy gaps, bail discrepancies, criminal charge discrepancies, and how blacks are treated in the job market relative to other races. So let’s stop pretending like their isn’t institutionalized racism going on today, and that the federal government is violating some core value by responding to it by addressing inequalities in other areas. Twisting MLK quotes to hate on “reverse racism” while not even taking a second to mention “racism” is pretty tacky.

Lol. There needs to be a version of Godwin’s law for people inaccurately evoking Martin Luther King Jr.

I will probably benefit from AA. I really don’t care whether it stays or goes because I’m happy with my stats. I get annoyed by people on CC acting as if a minority is taking their “hard earned” spot when they don’t understand that affirmative action is allowed under strict scrutiny. I’m a URM, I don’t think I’m mediocre. I think you just don’t want your chances of admission lowered and you’re talking about MLK and “minorities feeling bad about themselves” in the guise of your own selfishness. It’s ok to be against AA, but don’t pretend it’s because you value “liberty and justice for all” when SCOTUS has been pretty clear about how and to what degree Affirmative Action can exist. And it will be restricted further next year under Fisher v. Texas.

I feel worse for having read that post.

@T26E4 Oh don’t get me wrong, I certainly understand why fees are needed. But, as this thread states, my anger (if it can be called anger, more of an annoyance or drain) isn’t necessarily based in the most logical of things. But I suppose it’s a lesson in sacrifice.

hahahaha — well to be honest, I’m with ya! I suppose all things being equal, I’d rather have not paid those fees and gone out on a few more dates w/the wife too! hahaha

I hate how stressful it makes everything in your life. These next few months are supposed to be filled with fond memories of senior year, time with friends~~ instead I’m worrying 24/7 about being able to get into (and afford) a school. Not only a school, a school I would be proud of. Such a frustrating process. And the top schools won’t let me apply early to other private schools, so I will most likely (very likely) have to wait until late March of next year to even find out if I can attend a school.

The guilt that I may take someone’s place that is more qualified than I am but get a special seat because I was born on different grounds.

@Hamlin Are you talking about Legacy?

@rdeng2614 AA.

Here’s another-

The fact that indecisive students applying to prestigious institutions are more likely to get denied than by other students who’ve known what they wanted to pursue as a degree since they were in elementary school. People mature at different times. I.E Student A can have 10 EC’s related to STEM while the other has 10 EC’s in other fields that aren’t as relevant to one another. Student A will more likely get accepted despite the fact colleges love to echo- “We look for well-rounded students.”

the guilt you feel? Shut your front door.

My test scores were around the 30th percentile of the school I eventually matriculated. I’m SURE there were many others who were rejected that had higher SATs and ACTs than me. And I’m Asian too. A non-super scoring Asian admittee. Go figure right? Were they qualified? I’m sure they were. Was I qualified? You’re damn right I was qualified.

I was deserving b/c every freaking committee thought I was deserving.

The schools that admit 2.6 GPA students won’t be setting aside seats for minority students anyways – They’ll be trying to fill open slots in August. you’re in the clear. Keep your guilt.

Sent in app to my dream school before school started. Sent my more realistic apps in last week. Was accepted to dream school a few days ago. After I’d already paid all those app/SAT score frees! My summer paycheck, all gone!!

@T26E4 Ouch. I deserved that. I was speaking more for everyone else that is a URM but you’re right, anyways.

@freezycool Congrats!

Maybe you don’t understand that the idea is not to spend the endowment, it’s to spend the earnings thereof.

Capital. Almost everyone likes it.

@Hamlin don’t speak for entire races. We don’t all share the same views. I’m going into, and leaving this process guilt-free because I’m proud of the body of work I did in high school. College admissions is crazy enough to where I’m not going to hate myself over something adcoms are doing.
