@dfbdfb it’s still offered in some of the comprehensive HS here, but as an elective. My older D actually took it-think it was called life skills or something, and it got her into cooking enough that that’s what ended up being her chosen career. But I haven’t heard of it being required of kids in middle school in some time. Good for your D!
I don’t even think we had Home Ec in high school. We just had Foods, which I took two years of without ever once cooking. Middle school had nothing whatsoever.
I don’t even know what Home Ec teaches outside cooking and sewing (I actually can sew, surprisingly enough).
@spaceship well, thank goodness for the internet. Luckily, you are not the only one having to learn many things firsthand. At least you will be geat at learning how to acquire knowledge.
I never did dishes as a kid and didn’t know enough to rinse out the dishrag or sponge after using it. My roommate had to tell me. Wasn’t too pleasant about it either. Now at least I throw it in the dishwasher everyday after I rinse it out.
@sax Google and mobile internet is invaluable. I don’t know how older generations got by without instantly look everything up.
Also, now that my father’s around, I can just ask him everything. He’s infinitely more helpful than my mother or stepfather, but he wasn’t there for my teenage years. He usually ends up stepping in when I display ignorance of basic life skills that isn’t fixed with Google, and he’s the one who taught me how to ride a motorcycle and drive a car (and I learned with a stick, which I’m most glad of as I search for older used cars with decent off road performance).
Glad to hear your dad is now in your life @spaceship. Sounds like a cool guy.
Our middle school still has mandatory rotation through cooking, sewing, woodworking, human sexuality and personal finance.
Covered it all with my kids anyway except for sewing and woodworking where my skills are fairly nonexistent.
My 26 year old texted last week to ask if the week old curry in her fridge was good to eat. (At least she asked before eating it!)
