@thumper1 Thanks for the insight about Cleveland. My health science teacher told me that nursing students usually do clinicals 2 days a week, for 6-8 hours at a time. There’s still 5 days left in a week, so i’ll still work.
Sidenote: I’m going to apply to prairie view A&M since I’m eligible for a full ride scholarship due to my stats. Even though I want to get as far away from TX as possible, this will be my last option in the case that I can’t get loans from Sallie Mae/Discover/my credit union
This is a weird question, is there any way I can have my mom get denied a PLUS loan(without doing anything illegal like putting in false financial info) so I can get the $4,000?
as someone who has taught in nursing schools-- 2 days of clinical means many hours of outside preparation in addition to the classes and studying for those, add on top of that preparation for NCLEX-- and you are one very tired person. Rarely have I seen students manage full time nursing school and more than 8 hrs of paid employment. Consider an ADN program closer to home, and then you can pursue a BSN while employed and likely your employer will have a tuition reimbursement program.
Just for the sake of it, I’m going to email CSU to ask if they can somehow give me more financial aid. Probably a 0% chance of this happening, but it’s worth a shot.
@oneundecided thanks for explaining that. I’ll look for OOS community colleges that have dorms with ADN program, since commuting isn’t an option for me.
You’re eligible for a free ride and you’re trying to find a way to borrow ~$15k/year instead? Why would you want to do that? Is the scholarship guaranteed? If it’s too late in the year to apply and get it for this fall take a gap year, get a job, and apply for next year.
I cannot fathom a scenario where taking on the kind of debt you are talking about is a better plan than Prairie View A&M. Even if you have to share taxis with a classmate to get from the hospital back to your dorm once you start rotations- it’s a significantly cheaper option overall.
I just want to say that my daughter is in her last semester of an ADN program right now. Every one of her classmates who has failed out or is in danger of failing out has one thing in common - a job. It is so, so hard to juggle a job with the demands of nursing school, please do not underestimate this. Because if you end up failing out of nursing school after 3 or 4 semesters you have all the debt and no degree.
I checked the deadlines and I won’t be able to get the free ride at Prairie View A&M. So I’m ruling that out.
It’s actually funny how all of you guys are telling me not to have a job in college. I get what you mean about nursing being a demanding major, it’s just funny hearing a bunch of people tell me not to get a work.
I’ll consider looking for another major where I can get a career that pays well, since nursing school is super demanding. Although, I do love the health care field
Is it you can’t commute or you just want to leave Texas? Because if you just want to leave Texas that find. But say it so people can stop giving you advice on how you could stay in-state and not take out loans. It would be cheaper to get 1 $10,000 loan for a char instead of $15,000 per year for 4 years. If you are looking for another field. I would suggest medical laboratory technology. My sister just graduated from Farmingdale in NYC last year with that major. She had 3 job offers before graduation.
You won’t be able to get it this year or at all? If you’re guaranteed to get a full ride at a good school that has your major, it would be wise to take advantage of that. You shouldn’t be asking your mom to cosign ~$30k+ worth of loans for you.
People are advising you not to work because if you fail out in 2 years you’ll owe $12k, your mom will be on the hook for $20k, and you won’t have a degree. How would you pay back $32+k of loans with only a high school diploma and some college? You don’t want to be in that position.
Why is it so important to leave TX now instead of after college?
I just wanted suggestions on which places people would recommend to get privates loans from(Ex:Sallie Mae). Instead, no one suggested anything and started giving me advice on other options. I do appreciate everything you guys have told me because it is all good advice. My head is spinning a bit because now I’m confused on what exactly I need to do. The reason it seems like I’m okay with taking on some loans is because I have a backup plan to pay them off (working for the Indian Health Service, which offers loan $20,000 a year in loan repayment). I’m going to look for OOS community colleges with dorms so I can do a ADN program there
@austinmshauri It’s not guaranteed, I’m just eligible. I don’t want to take a gap year. I can’t get a job where I live because there’s no bus or subway where I live that can take me to work (I would do this, but it’s not possible for me) @sensation723 I do want to leave Texas, I can say that. There’s just many things I don’t like about the area I live in and I want to go a more urban city. This is just a personal preference thing. I will look into medical lab technology
@thumper1 A few years ago my mom had a situation that brought her credit score down. She has built it back up, so I believe she would qualify to cosign. She cosigned a loan for my brother who’s currently in college, so she should qualify for me. We’ll talk to the people at the credit union, just to make sure she’s good to go.
I’ll also look around for historically black colleges, since the give out money too
