The amulets are very popular. Sometimes you even see them set into sidewalks or walls in Turkey and northern Cyprus.
I bought an evil eye necklace a few years back that I wear fairly often.
This is how I think of it. My mama used to give me the evil eye when I was misbehaving in a place where she had no other means of correction. I think of it as the mom “look,” to straighten up one’s behavior. It’s been interesting reading about the cultural names and differences! I never knew any of those!
I’m Latinx and we call it “Mal de Ojo” which sounds similar to Italian “Malocchio” and the Portuguese “Olho do Mal” . It is one of those superstitions that has traveled all around the world hundreds, if not thousands of years with some very concerned grandmothers is my guess. The internet today has nothing on them 
I think of evil eye as given by someone who is not your well-wisher. They don’t like to see you praised, and are jealous of your success. I had a friend whose mother would put a dot of eyeliner behind her ear every time she dressed up for a formal event. That was supposed to ward off evil looks given to you when you are glowing from being all dressed up. It was done to protect you from bad vibes in your surrounding that may bestow bad luck on you.
Yep!!! No interesting cultural background on that side, just your basic WASP. But man, could that woman put the fear of god into us w/ a single raised eyebrow!!! Honestly, still can. Mom’s tiny and there are 6 of us… but the fact we never ganged up tells you how talented that one little eyebrow is.
