Middlebury is also about as selective as Cornell.

I don’t see Reed as a safety for anyone, due to its quirkiness and the importance of essays and interview, even if a student has top GPA and SAT numbers. Reed has to believe a student fits.

On my part, the definition of “safety college” is a college that is a SURE bet for admission. Presumably, applicants who have a decent shot at Princeton have a broader range of sure-bet colleges than the typical college applicant, but it’s important to have one sure bet on the application list to avoid disappointment in April.

my safeties are
uva instate
and harvey mudd…i hope

What are your stats? I think you are a little off in considering Mudd a safety. In the extreme case it would be a low-mid match. UVA as a true safety is also questionable. Perhaps you should go back to the drawing board and find some true safeties. Virginia Tech would be a good choice.

Thanks for the additional comments.

Nah, I can see UVA being a safety instate for some top Princeton applicants. I’m from California, and UCB is definitely a safety for some kids at my school.

Then again, our salutatorian applied only to Berkeley, Harvard, and Stanford. He was only accepted to Berkeley.

Reaches: Yale, Harvard, Princeton, Dartmouth

Matches: Williams, Georgetown, Brown,

Safety: GA State University

Time for a bump. Don’t forget your safety. Good luck to this year’s applicants.

“Middlebury is also about as selective as Cornell.”

“williams is definitely more selective than cornell.”

that doesn’t mean that Middlebury and Williams are more of a match for someone than cornell is!

Reaches: Yale, Columbia, Harvard, Princeton, U of Chicago (in order of my interest)

Matches: Georgetown, Emory, Brown, Duke (slight reach I suppose)

Safety: UNC-Chapel Hill (in-state)

A lot of colleges with “rolling” admission are about to begin accepting applications. Some will notify you very soon if you are admitted. Have you chosen your safety college?

Good luck to the class of 2008 applicants.

my reaches: pton, mit, harvard, stanford, penn-wharton
targets: columbia, uchicago
safety: cmu (early action–decision by oct 1. if i get rejected, ill find another safety.)

Is that Carnegie Mellon University, or some other college that abbreviates to CMU? I didn’t know there was such an early notification there.

cmu is Carnegie Mellon.
CMU has an early action program for those of us who went there for summer programs. in my case, i went for free for diversity-AP/EA and now gets this amazing early action. im quite satisfied with my decision to turn down harvard ssp.

Other Reaches: Havard, Yale, Stanford, Brown, Cornell

Slight Matches/Lower Reaches(Depending on ACT score): UCLA, USC, UC Berkeley, NYU, Columbia

Back Ups: UCI, UCSD, UCSC, UCD

Looks like penn’s applications are due to drop from 22,000 to zero. bummer!

I need to research more about penn.

nhsharvard: Based solely on the other schools in each category, Cornell is a slight match/lower reach and Columbia is a reach (unless you’re a hooked application there).

safeties: georgia tech, case western
match: colgate
