@TomSrOfBoston My twins were not thinking of applying but we took a walk to Harvard campus after Mike’s Pastry. The first thing at the entrance, a homeless man on the sidewalk 2 1/2 years ago.
@rosemaryandthyme Princeton was the opposite for us. An enthusiastic tour guide, stories about clubs (bad movie/good cheese club!), study abroad info. We wish we went earlier for the art museum. My kids applied, within the stats like thousands of other students so they were ok when denied. I was fascinated with Eating Clubs, plus we are NJ residents.
I can’t remember any tours they didn’t enjoy, Swarthmore too small?
@3sonsmom That’s fascinating that your tour guide was so different! We had a first semester freshman giving our tour-- she said it was part of her financial aid package to give tours. She may just not have had enough time at Princeton to give a really effective tour. We toured Swarthmore the next day. We happened to get the head tour guide, who was brilliant, charming, and hilarious. It was quite a contrast to the bland tour guide at Princeton, and Swarthmore shot up the list for a while.
I turned down Duke because I couldn’t stand my tour guide and the condescending admissions staff. Probably not the best way to make decisions, but there it is!
@rosemaryandthyme I remember Princeton and Swarthmore tour guides were both juniors and involved/happy students. Our Swarthmore tour was memorable since it was the only college visit, raining from the time we left our driveway and the entire tour! Pretty campus, Arboretum.
Carnegie-Mellon !! OMG… both my kid and I wanted outta there. Not even the wonderful, old guy clarinet instructor whom he liked a lot could sway him. That’s saying something cause at least 75% of his decision making process of where he goes to school rests with the instructor. Adversely, he LOVED Duquense, which was recommended by someone in the Music department at CMU. That in itself is saying something. They’re up the road from CMU… bumped them off the list and catapulted Duq UP !! Nobody we’ve spoken to so far has much love for CMU’s tours/campus.
