What school was unexpectedly your least favorite when you visited?

Two factors that are often overlooked or underestimated are how compact the campus is & how far away are at least a few stores & restaurants. You can end up wasting a lot of precious time if the campus is spread out, or if you have to take a hike or catch a bus just to get an off -campus cup of coffee.

Speaking of wasting time, I went to my local French bakery looking for some of that bread which Sushiritto recommended in post #466. Considering the response I got when I asked for a loaf of sans bread, it must be a favorite of contortionists.

When ordering food, I’m kind of a cross between Meg Ryan’s character in “When Harry Met Sally” and Jack Nicholson’s character in “Five Easy Pieces.”

You should see how I order a pizza, no cheese, no bread, just tomato sauce, veges, chicken and anchovies, then bake. :))

“Conroy and his book are about the Citadel”

Conroy attended the Citadel, but he says in the foreword that he based the book on interviews with VMI and service academy graduates of his era as well. It’s a not-subtle tip of the hat to VMI that he calls the school in the book CMI. (Whereas Frank Underwood’s alma mater is called the Sentinel.)

I am a little late, but just wanted to pop in to say that New Yorkers are actually pretty friendly for the most part. Of course other parts of the country are friendlier, but New Yorkers are not that bad. However, it does seem like a lot of people here are stressed and that can come across sometimes. Also, a lot of people here in NY are not from here originally so they bring different attitudes.

“New Yorkers are not that bad.”

Are you talking about those in, say, Buffalo?

@PuzzledJon I agree! I was not impressed with Harvard campus. Too much brick. The only saving grace was the grilled cheese food truck on campus that day

I’m talking about those residing in the 5 boroughs of NYC!!Embarrassinly, when I think of NY’er’s I forget about the rest of the state @moooop

@Old_parent hahaha! My son did the same thing
born and raised in SoCal but escaped us for the Northeast
go figure!

@crepes so what school did your kid end up choosing? I’m so glad to hear that about Cornell; my S goes there

I haven’t been to too many of these, but I’ve enjoyed reading – chuckling at some and agape in horror from others – the descriptions.

Would it be safe to say that given its great location and utter architectural/planning failure, that UCSD is a sad case of “what might have been”?

And poor Duke – did nobody enjoy the park/forest part of the huge campus?

And the Harvard quagmire. lol

And is there a Taco Bell at or near Stanford?

@TempeMom just be prepared if you’re going in June for gloomy weather. I’m a native San diegan so I’m familiar with UCSD campus and location. It’s not a college town by any means but it’s at the top of the bluff overlooking the ocean. Just a short ride down the hill and you’ll be at Caroline’s seaside cafe and adjacent to that is la jolla shores beach. Go further around the bend to La Jolla cove for a look at the seals, scuba divers and kayakers. It’s gorgeous. Anyway, the UCSD architecture is modern and campus vibe is mellow. If you’re looking for an ASU-type campus then SDSU would be your place.

@CALSmom My daughter is not going to escape quite that far. We’re going on what should be our final college revisit tomorrow, and since she’s been wearing a Berkeley shirt all week it looks like she’ll be a short flight away.

I’m hoping that Berkeley exceeds my now lowered expectations.

Very suspicious of the quality of this thread now. I have seen quite a few posts that seem to be the opposite of hate. Makes me want to chime in with the virtues of a small Maine LAC and its adorably pretty campus. But I won’t. That would be crossing a line.

^^ and you have the opening with the bashing of the too big, sprawling campus comments

Late to the party here
Syracuse University. Did a two hour outdoor tour in subzero temperatures with a tour guide. Only building we entered was admissions. They kept telling us how great the carrier dome was
but we couldn’t see it because there was a Duke/SU basketball game that afternoon. It was quite a turn off for my theater child!!!

@Ducky312 You were literally “left out in the cold” at Syracuse.

@Lindagaf the reason this thread is so popular is how it encourages passive aggressive positive reinforcement of every school you didn’t like or more importantly didn’t get into.

This thread is a microcosm of internet discourse
explain all that’s bad without having to provide any background or plan.

If you want to talk up B***s
trash the other two. Sooner or later someone will do your bidding for you (Have you ever climbed that hill in Lewiston at 40 below
at noon!?, Diversity in Brunswick means not driving a Subaru). See how easy it is!

@EyeVeee , I cannot trash the other two! That is disloyal to every Maine NESCACian!

P.S. Please disregard my earlier downthread trashing of Bowdoin, and my churlish slurs in other thread about Colby. I take it all back! Once a member of the BBC, always a member of the BBC! Right @gardenstategal ?

This thread is killing me. I read it with delight. There are schools I could totally trash.

But I live in fear of trashing someone else’s dream, and I really don’t want to do that.

Sigh, dilemma.
