Vandy, Rice, Duke, Tulane, Emory (among others) claim Harvard of the South.
To New Englanders, it is. Well, it is not in New England and it is not California, so it has to be midwest. What else is there?
Harvard of the Midwest would be either WashU, UChicago, or Northwesternā¦
I grew up in Connecticut but I never thought of the American Civil War as being a war between the North and the Midwest. Tennessee = The South. Thereās even the University of the South in Tennessee, but they now seem to want to call themselves āSewaneeā ā probably because New Englanders think of it as being in the Midwest anyway (?). It is SOUTH.
The southern Midwest, in my view, is a state like Missouri.
Harvard of the Midwest is Northwestern; Yale of the Midwest is the University of Chicago. The interesting thing about both of these Midwestern schools is that neither would claim to be the āHarvard ofā or the āYale ofā anything.
Chicago is just a bunch of driven geniuses, while Northwestern students are just working their tails off.
BTW, Harvard College is the Carleton of the East. Letās get that one straight!
UVa likes to say Harvard is the UVa of the north.
As a New Englander here, TN is not in the midwest but in the south.
@northwesty
Is the integration of the medical center and the undergrad campus a bad thing?
The Vandy undergrad premeds very much like the hospital being right there. But the big hospital footprint doesnāt do much for the aesthetics and flow of the two undergrad campuses.
LOL. Vanderbilt is more like the Harvard of middle Tennessee.
Actually the saying was Michigan was the Harvard of the West (a nod to Hail to the Victors). Similarly, I believe the t-shirt was Harvard - The Michigan of the East.
And before everyone goes nutsā¦Iām not arguing whether it is true or notā¦just telling you what the darn t-shirts said in the 80s. (CC Flak jacket onā¦GO!)
Ole Miss also claims to be Harvard of the South. School colors are Harvard red and Yale blue, located in Oxford.
Being from Missouri, which is undoubtedly Midwest, and having my best friend go to Vanderbilt on a full scholarship (which was a huge deal from our little world), I know we called Vanderbilt Harvard of the South years and years ago. Wikipedia, the source of āall knowing,ā puts Tennessee in the south, actually it is per the census bureau map on Wikipedia. But I love how many schools consider themselves the Harvard of the whatever.
Is Stanford ever called the Harvard of the west? I donāt recall ever hearing that. I guess that would be a dis. Is there a school that is called Stanford of the ā¦?
Stanford has been called āHarvard of the West.ā And some Stanford people have referred to Harvard as āStanford of the East.ā
Obviously my alma mater wonāt be referred to as the Georgetown of the West. Although its original name was University of Santa Clara. Why it decided to change to Santa Clara University to avoid confusion with the University of Spoiled Children I have no idea.
@MinnesotaDadof3 there might be some truth to your statement. My son met with the WashU undergraduate history advisor during a school visit. We found out later that the the professor was a Carleton undergrad and earned a PhD from Harvard.
Read this in an article about Harvard: āOur researchers are like the Univ of Chicago - but with social skills.ā
I was considering applying to Columbia ED but after visiting, I didnāt even apply there. I got a very intellectual vibe that made me feel out of place. I also didnāt like its location at all as NYC seemed to give it an āIām just going to my own thingā atmosphere. Itās a school that I would consider for grad school but I donāt think it would have been a good fit for me at all for undergrad.
Agree re Vandy being a bit disappointing. Nashville is nice & lively, & there are decent bars & restaurants adjacent to campus. And the Peabody part of campus is great. But, amazingly, the main part of campus looks somewhat like a 2nd rate liberal arts college⦠smallish uninspiring & mismatched buildings scattered around haphazardly. And continual ambulance sirens due to the GIGANTIC MEDICAL CENTER right in the middle of everything. Nice planning. Darn Midwesterners!
And forgive those in the Northeast for not knowing what or where the Midwest is. Since they have no intention of raising corn, stringing telegraph wires, or shooting buffalo, there is no reason for them to know. When I lived in Boston, a friend who knew I was originally from Michigan asked me if Northwestern Universitiy was some sort of branch campus of Northeastern Universitiy ⦠ouch.
HA! @moooop If you REALLY want to blow your Boston friendās mind, tell him/her that thereās also a Southwestern and a Southeastern!
