<p>In addition to having an NYC Showcase in May (which all of the MT seniors participate in), at NYU Steinhardt MT you also take a class 2nd semester of senior year called Audition Skills in which casting directors are regularly brought in for mock auditions!</p>
<p>WOW - with 40+ schools offering an “NYC Senior Showcase” it’s obvious that all showcases are not created equal, as I’m sure no one agency attends all of them. This is indeed looks like yet another MT growth industry. ;-D</p>

<p>I hate to correct positive “information” regarding my own school/program but it is important that honest and accurate information goes out into this community. Temple University MT does NOT currently do a senior showcase in ANY city at this time (including Philadelphia).
We DO perform a senior cabaret in May (each senior puts together their own senior cabaret set through the framework of assignments given in “Senior Cabaret Workshop”–a 400 level course taught in the second semester of senior year). The structure of the course/final performance is that of the traditional, New York City/Chicago etc cabaret art-form. This is a truly FABULOUS event and has become “must-see” performance among students/faculty in the theatre department at Temple. However, it is NOT a showcase, is only performed on campus, and currently no local casting directors, agents etc are invited to attend. It is an event that is (right now) primarily geared toward family/friends of the graduating MT class.
We DO have a class in the Fall semester of senior year entitled “Musical Theatre Dress Rehearsal” where casting authorities from approximately five theatre companies in Philadelphia COME to Temple’s campus and audition us in “mock” audition scenarios. Yes, these “mock” auditions have lead to further audition and JOB opportunities from seniors that have taken this class. HOWEVER, there are no agents (from Philadelphia, NYC, or otherwise) that participate in this class in any way. Of course, the hope is to expand all of this even more as the program continues to grow. And it is important to remember that Temple’s MT program only graduated its first class last Spring.</p>

<p>It looks like the answer is most of them, but a better question might be who attends and how many students get agent offers…and then jobs. Just like showcases, all agents are not created equal. Years ago I was told getting an agent is the easy part, getting one who will actually do something for you is another story.</p>
<p>The quality of a senior showcase I believe is judged by the attendees. Not just the number of casting and talent agents attending but who from the office shows up? I think it is fair to assume that the “top tier” schools get the “top tier” agents to show up. And by “top tier” I mean 5 schools not 50.</p>

<p>For what it’s worth, I just heard from several parents at D’s school that many kids there have gotten meetings and offers after their Senior Showcases in at least the past few years, so maybe I am underestimating their value.</p>
