I like the Christmas ornament idea. I think that is something they can bring out every year and remember you by. You could also send them a Christmas floral arrangement or a pot of poinsettias. I always like getting those because I don’t have enough time to go shopping for Christmas decorations. Those along with a heartfelt note of thanks would make my day. I agree with the others that getting a gift card from my daughter’s friend would make me uncomfortable.

I am another parent who would hate to get an expensive gift or gift card from a student. I often receive generous gifts from my parents and sister, all of whom have limited incomes. While I appreciate the thought, it kind of makes me miserable to think they are doing without in order to give me a gift. Since you clearly don’t want that, try to find something that is very inexpensive but very thoughtful.

Thanks for the responses everyone! I’m very glad to have some input as I had not really thought that $50 would seem too much. It makes me happy to buy for others and I’ve always been known to gift generously (although I do not have a lot of money) because I just want to show my appreciation and I like to spoil the people I care about.

My friend and I do not go to the same school, we go to school about 5 hours away from each other and home is the halfway point between us, so while I do like the idea of a picture of us together it’s not something doable I think I’m going to get a nice snowman Christmas ornament since my friend’s mom has a snowman collection at Christmastime (literally over 100+, I’ve counted lol). In addition, I decided to combine the consumable gift idea with giving a plant in the form of one of those edible arrangements- the floral bouquets made out of fruit and chocolate dipped strawberries on skewers in a pot, so I’ve combined everyone’s ideas! I guess that will still equate to ~50 dollars, but at least it doesn’t have a direct monetary attachment like the hibachi gift card would. Thank you all so much for the inspiration!
