My S (now a college sophomore) reminded me the other night on the phone about his summer college audition workshop back in 2016. During the two week workshop he had the chance to do a number of songs from his book. He decided to throw in a couple that he figured were “overdone” at auditions to see how the coaches would react. After singing “Corner of the Sky” to two different coaches, he received the same advice: you should only do what would be considered an “overdone” song if you believe you can do it better than the other 25-30 people who would sing it. Then they both told him they would have no problem if he walked into their audition and sang that song. That feedback gave him the confidence to keep the song in his college audition book.
