Vaizard- what are your grades?

You guys are seriously really ignorant (@other people who are criticizing him.) He hasn’t changed any of his EC’s. Also, as far as I can deduce, he’s Asian. Asians set higher standards than a lot of other people, so if you think those EC’s are great, they’re really not. Besides, he might not be a true pro at those sports, and languages don’t give you much cred unless you study them for 3+ years. And NYSSMA is not a highly competitive music association, I’m not sure where you got that from. Besides that, his question is not overly amusing. He made this topic 5 months ago when he was first applying, and he didn’t know that he had a relatively good score. That’s all…

Did he get in?

you guys were waaaaay overly mean to him. i think we should cut the new people more slack.

SSAT is not that important as long as your score is within theur range.
Exeter minimum is 85%. Even if your ssat is 99%, that does not guarantee
your admission. SSA is just one of many factors. Of course the higher the better. There are many other important factors such as Your EC, Transcripts, recom letters, interview. I like to recommoned to take at least a couple of times. When I took it first, I got 89%. in the secons I got 97%.
You can send the better score or both. They say they will take whichever is higher.

mwehehehe.
which schools did he end up getting into?

on a website it said exeter’s avergate entering ssat was 93%, if i remember correctly, but don’t hold me to it.

“Poor you. How can you ever get into a good school now?! Your chances are ruined! Your E.C.s are inadequate! You will be doomed to be a burger king cashier. You will never go to a good college all because you got LESS THAN PERFECT on your SSATs!”

This will forever be embedded in my collection of “best quotes in the world”.
I actually saw this forum from the something i have to prove one Vaizard brought up, and it’s like 230948308 days too late but just a little defense.

As previously mentioned before, Vaizard is very likely an Asian (I’m thinking Korean because Chinese is a “language” up there as well as Taekwondo) and we asians love high standards (and most, like Vaizard, do a lot to meet these standards) it’s a sort of modest thing when we say that something of ours sucks, but at some point it stops being a modest thing and starts crossing the line of fact, when we start believing that we really do suck when we’re probably very far off from that.

btw Vaizard I think it’s been mentioned a lot of times before, but your SSATs don’t really count much. I’m going to now assume you live in Korea (if you’ve mentioned you’re living somewhere else, then I’m sorry, I’m not at my sharpest right now) so I’m also going to assume that your SSAT prep teachers had been drilling essay sample techniques into your head for about 5 hours a week since the summer. I want to mention that this is, in my opinion, a waste of time. It’s great that you learn these techniques and all, but you can do the SSAT fine if you read a few books and brush up on your math skills, and I’m not trying to say that in an offensive way. People have not studied at all for these tests and managed 95,97, and 99th percentiles. And trust me, they’re not all Einsteins or anything. To anyone who spent tons of hours preparing for SSATs, kudos to you; you have the will and determination to do it, and I think that’s what your interviewees should have understood from you (sucks for them if they didn’t). But back to the point, it’s not very important, and I think it’s been determined you can even go down to the 70s and get accepted to a great school. If you get into the 20th percentile though, I think you should take the test again

anyways the SSAT thing wasn’t really for just Vaizard, moreover for any int’l students because it’s scary how much SSAT prep you do. It’s not SAT I, it’s not the PSAT, it’s a test that means nothing to the boarding schools compared to the college-bound standardized tests.

And happy end of March, I’ve been checking my mailbox every day to see if I’ve gotten the inquiry package from Thacher or Cate. (:

-sorry for the long post, just felt like ranting about SSATs because that’s the core of admission in boarding schools, at least in most of Korea’s opinion -

I was one of the posters who supposedly was “mean” to Vaizard. I’m sorry if I came across less than positive, but I still stand my original assessment. Vaizard had all the EC’s covered: 3 languages, 3 sports, and Piano.

Had he just left his post at that, I think people would have just responded the way they typically do with a Chance thread: What are your grades? These schools are really competitiveno one can say for sure Good ECs SSAT scores arent the most important, but should be xx% for those particular schools. etc,

But Vaizard goes on to say

It was this post that caused me to comment on his chance thread. And, I still maintain, he was being disingenuous. He has good ECs and if it were really true that some of his family members sat on the board of these particular schools, and/or kindly donated Large Sums of Money to these schools, and they were writing letters of recommendation on his behalfwell, of course, all of this would make an impact (to answer Vaizards question.)

I think he proved my point, when pushed to respond about the family donations, he simply says we know people who have. Not at all the same thing as his prior post.

Oh, and of course people were going to smile about the title of the thread. :)

I’m Chinese. I meant that we have connections to people we have?

I live in the USA. I didn’t go to a prep school for the SSAT. Instead, I took online prep and did like 4 review books by myself. Second time I took it I got a 2328… We sent that to the schools too. I didn’t get into EXETER or ANDOVER, and I got wailisted at Deerfield/Hotchkiss.

Wow. Still respecting your will. I study for school tests but unless it’s the SAT or PSAT, not studying for really anything else.

I am a disgrace to asians :P

Dalton is a great school in NYC by the way, you should also look at Columbia Grammar and Horace Mann, which is in Riverdale.

Your best. Duh.

bumpity bump…

umm… this is a really old thread. But yeah, I don’t think it counts as a language if you are Chinese. It’s like saying, “I’ve been studying English since I was born!”

I am tryin to apply to dalton and my GPA is really high 9’s, I have so many extra criliculats including tae quon do, math programs, soccer for 8 YEARS and even went to barelone, and more. My teacher reccomendations are definitely gonna be REALLLY good, my interveiw went really good, I was making jokes and everything. but my SSAT perentile is 84 or 83, do I still have a chance?
