What symptoms of aging are you experiencing?

^If you don’t mind saying…besides the supplements you mentioned, what other hormones are you taking?

I’m asking because I have become very interested in nutritional supplements (I just admitted to myself today that it’s due to the aging process  ) and have been experimenting with different things. I just added Chromium. Have been experimenting with Glutamine (it’s suppose to help with sugar/carb cravings). Have had good results with Gingko - I feel like my thinking is clearer when I take it. Also, taking Lecithin, Vit. D, magnesium, Omega 3 and a few others).

I do occasionally get the ‘mind blank’ thing. It’s very disturbing when it happens. The other day I ran into a woman at work that I see in meetings and in the hallway once every few weeks or so and she started talking to me and I completely blanked out her name. This is someone I have had extension conversations since our sons are the same age. It really freaked me out, though her name eventually resurfaced. I find if I try too hard to remember something it makes it that much more difficult to recall.

momlive, the bio-identicals I’m taking are pregnenolone, progesterin and testosterone, since my levels were all so low they weren’t even measureable. My sister is doing a similar program, but they also added estrogen for her since she was very low. Some of the supplements I hadn’t listed are resveratrol, a women’s formula, alpha lipoic acid, vessel protection (with folate, B12 and B6), 5000iu of Vitamin D-3, Omega 3 and some others that I can’t recall…alot of pills. But it is all targeted for me, the levels in my blood, and my problems and family history. I never used to believe in this stuff, I thought if you just ate well enough and exercised heartily, you could get through it. But this is a major boost and I feel alot better. The only negative being I used to really enjoy a glass of red wine, but now it tastes nasty to me, too sweet! And I loved chocolate, so now I guess I’ll have to find some other guilty pleasures in life.

I always had a problem with names, so it doesn’t bother me anymore. But they have given me several supplements that target brain issues, though pregnenolone and progesterin in particular are supposed to help that brain fog. Of course your levels have to be measured and closely monitored to figure out what you need.

^^I’m looking into bioidenticals as well and would love to hear from others who have been on them, results, side effects, etc.

All of a sudden, every store I go into, I’m “sir”. Even 40 year olds call me sir. (I am male at least…if not I guess I’d be REALLY upset)

It takes longer to metabolize alcohol…

“I’m looking into bioidenticals as well and would love to hear from others who have been on them, results, side effects”

I’ve talked to a number of women who are really happy with them, though it can be rather expensive and dicey on whether/how much your insurance company will pay for them. My sister started a little after me, with amazing results. She has low thyroid issues and has taken medication for years. She went from not even wanting to leave her house to go to Walmart because she’d have to talk to people, to working out at the YMCA two hours a day. She has had dramatic results with how she feels, she says it’s like she was twenty years younger, and amazingly enough, the hormone levels have helped her thyroid levels get better. I didn’t know there was any relationship, but there is. I haven’t had those sort of results, but for people whose hormones are totally out of whack, to get to optimum makes a huge change in how they feel. From less stress, more confidence, feelings of well being, and energy.

There are side effects that they list, as in any medication, from each hormone. But you only seem to get the negative ones if your levels are too high, and any good doctor would start you at a low level, monitor you closely and decrease the levels if you showed any side effects. They aren’t awful, just things like excess sweating or increased body hair, but I haven’t had any negative effects at all.

So how do you locate a provider of the bioidenticals? What is the medical specialty?
What state are you treated in busdriver11?

I’m not sure how you locate them, except perhaps by word of mouth, google, or perhaps best would be to ask your primary care doctor. These sort of clinics are all over the US, with many in California. I’m in Washington, and the clinic is the Longevity Medical Clinic, which has a couple different locations in major Washington cities.

As far as the specialty, my clinic only has very experienced MD’s. Mine has a backround as a specialist in endocrinology.

Thanks! I was just googling them and it looks like they are hormones for menopause.

that ringing in my ears… has anyone found an answer yet?

That is a symptom of hearing loss- what does your doc say?

“Thanks! I was just googling them and it looks like they are hormones for menopause.”

Actually, they measure 8 different hormones and those are just the ones I was low on. Haven’t had any premenopausal symptoms yet, except for the brain fog (I think). Most people start this in their fifties and sixties, though some start in their thirties. Many are men. Just didn’t want you to think this is only to treat menopause. Here is a link to my clinic, though there are many different types of clinics out there, this gives you the idea:

My knees get weird twinges. The latest one doesn’t seem to want to go away. Cuts seem to take much longer to heal - especially the regular biopsies my dermatologist keeps giving me. I’ve become allergic to bandaids. Ugh!

OTOH, my physical fitness levels are probably the best they’ve ever been.

Thanks - I looked at it and found a few clinics near me. I’ll let you know what happens.:)

Please do, we’d love to hear how it goes.

As an extra incentive…I didn’t start this as a weight loss program, but it seems to be a byproduct. Started out at 133 two months ago, weighed myself at the gym last night–123. I’m almost 5’6 so I haven’t seen that since before babies (21 years ago) no matter how much I’d exercised and dieted. This is without intentional lifestyle changes, by the way.

Now had I known that was going to happen, I would have checked it out years ago!

H just started hearing it about 6 months ago. He’s 60. It’s called tinnitus, and he now listens to a recording that’s supposed to make it go away.

mom2collegekids - I had that exact knee problem plus they hurt in the mornings coming down the stairs. Then about 3 years ago, I took up Pilates. Now I am super limber and the pain and creepy sensations are totally gone.

^^^ I work at a senior center and so have a pretty clear idea of where I’m headed. We offer 4 different kinds of exercise classes (yoga, aerobics, strength and balance, Tai Chi - no Pilates yet, though). Our Tai Chi is presented by the Arthritis Foundation. Their slogan is “Physical activity: the arthritis pain reliever” and it certainly seems to be true.
