How about card catalogs and microfiche? I remember that big machine that you ran the fiche through. Online databases are GREAT.

smoking on airplanes

Heck, smoking in restaurants, too (although I think there are some states that still allow it…). We used to have a student smoking area in our high school.

Anybody mention party lines? We had one when I was a kid. Had to wait until our neighbor was done with her conversation…

I recall explaining some aspects of the Kosovo War to our kids. Kids in the US are used to an incredible infrastructure where water, electricity, fuel, communications and entertainment are supplied in a reliable way. If you need food, groceries, supplies, etc., kids just notice that their parents drive to a store and purchase the goods.

In the Kosovo war, it was difficult to explain that circumstances can deteriorate very quickly for people without this infrastructure. I had to explain that all of the infrastructure that we have isn’t just a big accident but a lot of people deciding to building and create things to make a profit supplying services to others.

Smoking in class!

Pica rulers in journalism class.

Party line phones.

No liquid soap.

Well…I’m 17 & I remember not having a computer. My family’s first computer wa a tandy1000 that was basically meant for playing computer games on floppy disks and there was no “word documents” and no printers. Also, I had a 5 station television until I was 12, no DVD player until videos were practically non-existent, no CD player until 2002, and no fancy ice cube maker on my fridge. I remember much much more but not everyone forgets about what the past was like and what it was like to not have technology or cell phones (I didn’t get one 'til 9th grade!) or even cordless phones. And I can’t forget having to walk to the supermarket because families used to have only one car.

Anybody here remember Paganitzu or EPYX?!

I think walking to the store/not having access to a car will never be TOO far out , but a tandy 1000 within the last 17 years is saying something!

Hanging clothes out to dry on the clothesline in the backyard.

Tennis shoes only made of canvas so were only worn in the warm months.

no sunscreen.

We had to put white shoe polish on our canvas Ked’s to extend the use.

I was telling my D about some frat parties when I was in college where there was only one choice of beverage and it was beer. She said, “Why didn’t you carry a bottle of Aquafina in your purse?” I had to explain that nobody thought water was worth paying for.

Texasmama - I can remember going to parties in college and saying that I really didn’t feel like drinking that night and someone would say - don’t worry, there will be plenty of beer and pot there.

The mention of color TV reminded me that my H says that one year his brother asked for a color TV for Christmas.

He got a color TV for Christmas. It was blue.

Lol. Speaking of TV, does anyone remember when UHF channels made their appearance? All those extra channels to watch, but of course you had to upgrade your TV to get them.

Adjusting the antenna on top of your TV – or using a coat hanger.

Exclusively paper tickets for flights – sent through the mail, or picked up (physically) from a travel agent. Not being able to make plane reservations unless you used or worked with a travel agent.

I remember taking empty Coke bottles back to the gas station (pretty sure it was the gas station) with my father–not for recycling, but to be re-filled.

Remember having just an AM radio?

I love nostalgia threads! Remember those plastic things you could put on a black and white TV to make them “color”? Remember “Winky Dink”? You put a plastic thing on the screen ( hopefully before) you drew on it.

http://www.skooldays.com/categories/saturday/sa1355.htm

Hmm… I don’t Know why I remember it if it only aired until '57, but I do!

Oh…

“The show was revived in syndication for 65 episodes beginning in 1969 and ending in 1973.”

Shrinkrap - we had one of those plastic sheets you attach to the television for color. Green at the bottom, brown in the middle and blue at the top - I believe. We got it from a door to door salesman.

Speaking of which - remember door to door salesmen?

In high school, I asked my father if I could get a calculator.

He said, “Sure.” And handed me a pencil and a piece of paper.

"- remember door to door salesmen? "

Remember encyclopedias? I still love “real” encyclopedias!
