What things in life are you uncharacteristically cheap on?

@JenJenJenJen I have tried SO HARD to like red wine, and I just don’t. I feel like I’m swilling red wine vinegar every time I try some.

It may be because when I was a kid I used to drown my vegetables in red wine vinegar to make them palatable, and I “broke” my nose for red wine…

(I should probably put this in the what do you hate that most other people love thread)

Um, I am not certain. Mozilla? There is an icon that I click on that H set up. I know he has told me never to use the Explorer icon.

@techmom99, ok, in the upper right corner you should see a small icon with 3 horizontal bars on it. When you click on that icon, it will open a menu with a bunch of selections on it.

One of those selections will say “New Private Window”. Click on that, and it will open a new window for private browsing. Read the NYTimes in that window, when you run out of articles close the window and open a new one, and you will get more free articles.

This works for lots of web sites, not just the NYTimes.

@MotherOfDragons, I’ve never met a red wine I like either.
I also agree with your price point, more or less. I’ve found I generally don’t like a more expensive wine any more than a $12-17ish bottle. But, I generally don’t like the really cheap ones.
Things I’m cheap on include “work” lunches. I may bring expensive ingredients from home, but I hate paying for cafeteria style food. We go out to expensive dinners, or lunches when on vacation, but otherwise I try not to spend much on lunch.
Expensive coffee drinks, except when I’m on vacation. I have a very expensive espresso machine, I use it every day (mostly hazelnut and vanilla lattes), and it makes me happy. But I offset that expense by not buying coffee out.
Valet parking/expensive parking garages. I would rather walk a block or two than pay for the convenience, most of the time.

We recently flew first class on the return leg of a vacation and had access to a private lounge at the airport that had a full bar, breakfast buffet, and a barista. Our luggage was also tagged as priority and was first to arrive in the baggage claim.

Besides the savings of not stopping at Starbucks, being able to breeze through Customs and get out of the airport before the crowd made it worth it.

I will fly coach for trips 3 hours or less. But if I ever take a 36 hour trip…again…it will either be business class, or I won’t go. I totally understand that!!

My husband has tons of expensive clothing for bicycle riding. I just can’t think that’s worth it when I can ride in shirts or whatever.

I am very happy to have free upgrades to economy plus and first class. I will pay if the cost per person works out to about $100 or so per person for the RT between HI and 5+ hours away. If it’s $500 or $1000 extra per person, nope I won’t pay.

Another CC thread with everybody trying to one up the next on how frugal they are.

Posters talk about where they are frugal - people complain. Posters talk about where they splurge or spend money on expensive things - people complain about that, too. Can’t win around here.

Yes, @doschicos I think that’s right. The funnier threads to me are about the expensive stuff, not the frugal stuff, but I definitely lean to the more frugal side. Paying tons of money for a handbag, shoes, etc. is just not something I’m ever going to do. I like quality and will look for that but don’t spend more than I have to and tend to look for good deals. I know I could spend more sometimes , just don’t . So, the “cheap” threads are also interesting. But, I feel lucky that I can even think about spending more for things than I tend to do. Many people just don’t even have options to spend more. They are living paycheck to paycheck.

Found it, thank you so much!

We live in a high cost-of-living, high tax burden, expensive housing-costs large city. So that’s our “splurge”, living in major metropolitan city, along w/ earning too much as a dual-income couple, to qualify for college financial aid fir our kids. Boo-hoo on our high condo assessment fees too, which unexpectedly spiked after we purchased our home

So everything else becomes “frugal”, and yes we shop Aldo and (excellent) thrift stores, though no one can tell, given everyone is decked-out in high-quality like-new designer-type clothing, and eat well-prepared organic food (thank you Onkel Aldi!). Yes to Costco glasses, gas, tires, and Joes Jeans, etc. Yes to half-price theatre tickets, free museum days, and walk-everywhere for most days. We’re saving for retirement.

Oh… here is one. Mr. would rather be buried in his own yard than pay any “association fee.” Sigh, no condo for us… the lawnmover is all his.

i get really annoyed if something goes on sale the next week. For that reason, I. only buy certain drug store items when they go on sale. Because some items seem to irregularly go on sale. I wait for the sakes.

OP here. When I said “uncharacteristically cheap” I meant relative to yourself. This is not a one up on someone else. If you are always frugal, then you are not uncharacteristically cheap when you buy no brand detergent. If you always eat out at expensive restaurants, but would only buy store brand olive oil then you may be uncharacteristically cheap when it comes to buying olive oil.

I guess I can’t comment on this thread, then. I am cheap on everything!

I’m not frugal. I’m not wasteful, but I like clothes, shoes, makeup, skincare, athletic gear, electronics etc. I understood the OP and that’s why I posted that my reluctance to pay for early flight checkin was uncharacteristic for ME! It also bugs me to pay a lot to park my car.

Like MOfWC, I am not frugal, but I am not wasteful either. I just cant pay $60 to someone to drive me from my place to the airport when the transit can do the same thing in the same amount of time for $6.

I was going to make fajitas, but balked at one of the upper end grocery stores that wanted $2.98 for orange, red, and yellow bell peppers. That’s 2.98 EACH. I passed, and I’m not particularly frugal. That just annoyed me and felt like they were taking advantage.

I’m frugal - so it is uncharacteristic of me to pay full price for NY Times, Washington Post, local political magazines and local newspaper - all online. I do it because I believe in supporting the investigative journalists who are ferreting out the lies and misinformation!
