Another tip to save time is to make it to the Flawn Academic Center to get your ID made before orientation starts. My son walked right up and got his without waiting. The student who helped him said there would be a LONG line during orientation. The ID Center is open 8:30 am - 5 pm, Monday through Friday.

If you’re staying in the dorm, I highly suggest you bring pillows, blanket and maybe even sheets. My orientation experience was freezing cold dorm…nasty, itchy blanket and tiny pillow.

I also suggest that you bring a laptop because I had to use my roommate’s computer to look at classes. Not fun.

Awesome advise MaineLonghorn…My D is going up the day before so I am going to have her back her arrival time up a bit to go the day before!

Bring a towel!
People will think you’re a pretty hoopy frood.

What’s your major JR?

Maine’s advice is pretty good. Go to the FAC early, you’ll need your ID card later and everyone waits. The lines get LONG.

Yeah, try to get your ID as early as possible… I went on the morning of the first day when everyone was checking in to dorms and doing campus tours and such and there was no line. On the contrary, a friend of mine waited an hour to get his.

I got my ID one week after I was admitted. I simply went to upgrade my UTEID and while I was there they had me get my school ID. If any of you can get to campus before the orientation starts (I know we have a few in here from SA and Austin), you should go to the ID Center and get it early.

Where do you go get your UTEID upgraded…same place??

getting your ID and orientation as a whole is crazy, but I guess that is what one would expect from a dysfunctional university

So back to the whole laptop deal…what is this FAC building? Is that where all the computers and advisors are for students during class registration? So if I were to bring my laptop, I could still go there and get help from the advisors, except I wouldn’t have to wait in line for a computer?

^The FAC is a building near the Tower where UT’s ID and IT services are located, as well as a computer store, lots of study space, a big room w/ computers and a few classrooms. And yes, I think if you bring your laptop to the FAC you’ll be able to get help from advisors without having to deal with the lines.

If there’s any confusion, your academic advisor is the one who helps you decide what classes to take. You’ll have a specific time set for you sometime during orientation in which you’ll get to meet with them.

On the day of registration, you’ll go to the FAC at another designated time slot, and it’s the orientation advisors who help you register for your classes on the system. If I remember correctly, if you use your own laptop, you won’t be able to get help from them during registration. You can look at the course schedule on your laptop or at the library beforehand if you’re still picking classes and making up potential class schedules (you might need to make several backups). However, the benefit of going to the FAC, waiting in line, and using a computer there, is that you have the orientation advisors on hand to help you when you’re on the system. It’s pretty easy to figure out on your own but since it’s your first time registering, having the OAs around just in case is good.
