@oldfort . What “town” do you live in ?
I see furs all the time at the local thrift shop. In AZ there’s not much occasion to wear them even if someone wanted to, but there must be lots of them still in peoples’ closets that eventually end up donated.
We had the old fur coats made into several beautiful teddy bear (complete with hats and antique broaches from grandmothers).
Here’s what I did with furs from both my mom and my MIL:
They use the coats as natural bedding for animals in wildlife rehab centers. loved the idea, but I’m sure it’s not for everyone.
^love that.
I get the objections. But I’ve never ever had a coat as warm as my great grandmother’s seal coat that was passed to me. Furs don’t last without care. Even so, they eventually become too fragile to repair. Last place to store them and try to give away or resell is FL, AZ, or other warm states.
There’s resale business in colder climates, selling used coats in great condition. You could call a reputable furrier store up north and ask if they do. Then ship to them. Depends.
NYC
One of my goals for my weight loss is to fit back into my “new to me” mink. It was my first major purchase 30+ years ago and I got it at the Ritz Thrift Shop. The wife of a co-worker bought a similar coat, new and custom, from the same designer around the same time. At a party, she actually picked mine up and tried to put it on, but it was too small. Mine was 4K and hers was $15 back in the late '80’s.
It is the single warmest thing I have ever owned. I adore it and can’t wait to wear it on the streets of NYC next winter. I have always told my kids that if any of the cretins red paint me, they will be bailing me out of jail because I will destroy them. Sadly, my D refuses to wear it although it would fit her perfectly as she is the same size I was back in the day.
I probably wouldn’t buy another fur coat and mink (this is Blackglama) is the only fur that ever interested me. I know full well that a large part of it is because I grew up in the projects in the South Bronx and a mink coat that I bought for myself was my way of saying I made it out and up. Nowadays, I’d probably buy an apartment.
The person I know in NYC has never had anyone comment on the fur. Either they assume it’s fake of don’t care or MYOB.
I found that my niece-in-laws wanted mine. They were thrilled. My daughters were not interested.
Coats for Cubs is intriguing. I’m definitely considering donating my grandmother’s old mink. Maybe I’ll try to sell MIL’s through The RealReal, because the proceeds would go to her. I’m honestly surprised that there is any sort of resale market because I thought furs were firmly “out”. I guess I’ve never paid any attention to it because I’ve been anti-fur (for myself) since way before PETA and so forth. My father was an animal lover and was opposed to hunting for sport, furs, etc. and that rubbed off on me. Also, when I was a little girl we had an elderly great aunt who would come to holiday meals and Sunday dinners. In the winter she would wear this fox fur … thing - it had the head and tail intact, and the tail was clasped in the teeth. That thing was absolutely horrifying! I remember feeling so bad for the poor fox.
Definitely cured me of ever wanting to wear a fur.
SIL covered a bench/ottoman for the foot of her bed with her mom’s old fur.
At least 30 years ago my mother wanted to give me one of her fur coats, and I had no interest in it. To me fur coats were for wealthy biddies and I was a very casual young person; well maybe not that young! She had it made into a bomber jacket with leather trim for herself; I think both my daughter and I borrowed it a time or two. As a bomber jacket, it had a new look and I guess I was willing to wear it; it now sits in my closet along with a fur coat of my MIL’s. I have no intention of wearing either, but can’t part with them as both women would be upset with me. Maybe making teddy bears for their great granddaughters would be a nice idea.
My mom gave me one of her minks in JULY one year…in Ohio…I was flying home. Conversation went like this.
Mom: do you want my dark mink?
Me: sure
Mom: will you wear it to work?
Me: NO
Mom: Will you wear it to walk the dog or go to the grocery store?
Me: No.
Mom: then what WILL you do with it?
Me: I’ll wear it when I go to the symphony.
Mom: ok…here…(and she hands me the coat…no hanger or anything)
Me: do you have a garment bag I can put this in?
Mom: it’s a mink…wear it.
(My inside voice wanted to scream…it’s 95 degrees and humid…I’m not wearing a mink on the plane home).
I was approached by a lady with a request to take a fur coat and make pillows out of it. The coat belonged to her MIL who was recently deceased. The coat was very meaningful to her and so as a favor to her FIL, she was looking for someone to cut it up and make pillows. It was an absolutely beautiful mink coat (my dream fur coat actually) and it had been properly taken care of. I made several pillows out of it and they were truly lovely. One pillow was for the FIL and the rest were given to the children and grandchildren. They made lovely keepsakes and I think they will be enjoyed. Fur is a fun accent fabric.
