In L.A., all soda and candy sales were banned. However, it was a big loss of revenue because of what I believe are called “pouring rights” - not sure if I have the term right. Cash-strapped schools were getting a lot of money from the soda companies. Anyhow, here is how it played out at my son’s urban high school. Candy is banned in machines. But if a kid stands in the middle of the school quad and says, “I want chocolate” about ten people will come up and offer to sell it. There is literally a huge black market going on for these contraband food items and kids make a tidy profit off of it or else are raising money for their clubs. It’s not easy for administrators to catch them. Heck, they are having a hard enough time trying to catch people smoking pot on campus. If kids want junk food, they will find a way to get it.

^Wow, that is a really funny image (the kid standing in the middle of the cafeteria). I wish everywhere worked like that. I could announce, “I want chocolate!” anywhere, anytime, and my needs would be fulfilled.

I have been packing my husbands lunch for many years. I buy really good edememe at Costco in a large package and divide and freeze in small plastic bags. I also bake and freeze banana bread, sliced in individual servings. Frozen items in his lunch stay fresh. I freeze cupcakes and bagels. I buy nuts in bulk and mix them with dried fruit.
Why do I go to the effort? His health, first and foremost. It does save money but the biggest reason is the fat and the salt contained in the food available to him when he’s traveling and he travels constantly.
Packing a lunch is a great way to make students health wise.

This brings back memories! Both D’s packed lunches all the way through school. Never had a school lunch because they didn’t think they looked good. Over the years they had just about everything you can think of. Freezing gogurts, water bottles, juice, grapes, etc will keep anything else cold. Bagels, fruit, salads and wraps seemed to be the most popular in HS. And totes and lunch boxes were still cool accessories as were plain brown bags.
