What to wear to a hippie/artsy wedding in a park? I'm oldish and plump

On the other hand, if it is in, say, Sacramento or Yosemite Valley, it could be 100 degrees and miserable in the summer. There are so many microclimates in Northern California that it is impossible to predict weather without knowing specifics.

FYI - ModCloth is offering 20% off on orders over $100 today, and shipping is always free on $75+ orders. I’ve purchased from them and returned items without any issues, in case anyone is not familiar with that site.

There is hippie/artsy casual and hippie/artsy dressy. Which do you think this wedding is?

I’m loving Calypso lately…probably because I just bought a few pieces in Boston in anticipation of my upcoming vacation. Their clothes are truly lovely in person - quality fabrics, feminine, and flattering. Perfect for an artsy/hippie/pretty look.

Either of these tops with tailored straight legged white pants and wedges:

Calypso is also appropriate for a more mature body – Free People and Anthropologie appeal to a younger demographic and I’ve found their dresses look a bit skimpy on me. I do like their jeans and sweaters, though.

I like the idea of a simple dress or tunic and pants dressed up with accessories. Here’s a cute pashmina scarf that might work.

That Calypso stuff is awfully pricy, IMO.

The Calypso stuff reminds me of what we wore to casual outdoor parties in the 1970s in East Africa. It doesn’t feel dressy enough to me.

Every time my eyes hit on the word “Calypso” in this thread, I read it as “Cal Poly”. Need to spend less time on CC…

From Sundance, I like this one a lot for someone who is 5’4" and amply endowed:

Would look great with a pretty shawl.

I’ve seen women wearing shrugs, and unless they are extremely slim they usually look like the reason it isn’t buttoned is that it just won’t go around them. The effect is particularly bad on fuller-figured women, IMHO. YMMV, of course.

@Gourmetmom, tailored white pants are highly unlikely to work for a person who is 5’4", an apple, and often wears petite pants. If they fit her waist, they will balloon below like the Little Dutch Boy. If they fit her legs and look in proportion with her height, they won’t go around her waist. BT/DT

^^^In that case, I would buy pants that fit at the waist, then take them to a tailor and have them hemmed and the legs taken in.

Those Calypso prices are insane. You can get the same type of stuff for under $50 on etsy. (I know, I’ve ordered.)

Not the same thing. The Calypso items are silk, not cotton - drapes beautifully and is quite flattering. It’s a well-known brand for very nice resort wear.

I’m wondering if a pearl gray or cream or light camel pant might work better than white pants. I’m envisioning a white or off white gauzy top, perhaps with white- on-white embroidery, and an awesome shawl in a light turquoise and camel/ tan that picks up being by the sea. Then a chunky turquoise bracelet and/ or earrings (though not matchy) and wedge woven sandals with a pedicure in Essie ballet slippers.

True; but a quick search shows plenty of silk options on etsy, and many websites for a fraction of the cost of Calypso. I’m not denying that the Calypso stuff is beautiful and flattering. Just overpriced.

I don’t think she has specified that ithe wedding is near the ocean; could be in the High Sierras for all we know. Would definitely be helpful to know more about the setting.

I have to be honest. This lady says she is short, plus size and busty and I think too much pattern and flowy can go REAL frump real fast. And what might look great on a tall slender woman can look eccentric old lady on another build. I’d style her plainer and add color and interest through fun, bohemian accessories with texture and pattern. And I really like Consolation’s shawl idea.

Agree with Pizzagirl! What she suggested a couple of posts above is perfect for a seaside event, and if the colors are changed to earthy or dark blues/navy, it would work for an inland event.

Don’t wear white to a wedding unless you are the bride. Very uncool. It says “hey look at me I’m in white like the bride!”

I agree that the Calypso stuff is both nice and really overpriced.

When I get to be Judi Dench’s age, I want to dress like she dresses in the Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel movie (and Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, but she was really sharp in the second one).

I think when you’re already doing a “bohemian wedding” on the beach you don’t need to worry that anyone will mistake a guest wearing a gauzy white tunic top for the bride.
