What to Wear...

Thanks for the link, emilybee. Shall I assume that the boots were not hip when I was wearing them in the 80s? (This question coming from the one whose boys wear khakis to school every day.)

I do recall colored knock-off Bean boots but they were never very tall; they barely seemed to cover the ankle which kind of defeated the point of wearing the boots in the snow. Am disappointed to read that Bean is now making them in colors, but I guess they realize that if they don’t, someone else will.

I have Bean low cut duck boots and they are fine for wet weather, but not made for cold weather. You need to get them a size large so you can load on the socks.

CT1417- no offence taken. As I said, D2 has just worn them to death.

Interestingly enough, D1 got L.L. Bean boots at the same time D2 Uggs boots. The Uggs outlasted the L. L. Bean boots by several years.

No comment or even care on my part. Just stating what my family experienced.

Some of the duckboots come with liners, so are warmer. My kid is at school in Maine and he wears them all winter, so they are warm enough for him.

You can send your boots back to Bean and they will repair them.

I think in the 80’s they were a very regional thing.

Emilybee–yes to regional. Having just tried searching for Fair Isle sweaters by Deans of Scotland, I am guessing those were not a big hit nationwide either. You wouldn’t have known that walking the halls of my HS in the early 80s. (All this talk has me flashing back to HS.)

Bean is great with their return policy. Once I have worn an item to death, I am ready to concede that I have gotten my money’s worth. I still have an almost brand-new backpack I had planned to send back after the zipper broke a few months in.

I remember wearing my LLBean boots (also in the 80s) more for the rainy/muddy seasons than during the cold of the winter. That’s when we pulled out our fair isle sweaters and ugly puffy full length down coats! Wow, I’m cringing remembering some of my clothing choices from college!
As far as Uugs…I first saw them on my roommate in northern California in the early 90s! She would wear them with shorts (we all wore shorts year round…after all it was California and I had moved from the Midwest so I felt like it was always summer in California) I thought she had lost her mind because they were so ugly! Then I slipped my feet into them one day and I have been in love ever since. For someone whos feet are always cold they are blissfully warm and cozy to wear!

Here is the Ugg version of the duck boot (as ugly as they can be, but they are quite warm, water resistant, and cosy):

Thank you for the link. I just ordered the pull-on shearling 7" Bean boot. Kind of like the UGG version, but not as busy looking and no laces! Laces and slush just never mix! I want boots on and off quickly. I wish I had these today.
