What varsity sports look best?

yeah i cant believe it took you guys so long to mention crew…

and there are too many kids who think playing 4 years of jv football makes them big jocks. the original post in this thread is stupid anyway

Admissions would probably look at all sports equally in terms of participating. If you excel at a sport then that would be even better. They are not going to say “oh this sport is easy so it doesn’t matter”… they are not as ignorant as emperor. And all sports are different with “easy to make team” depending on what school you go to.

For example, at my school our basketball team is horrible. It is easy to make the team because very few people actually try out. They’re practices aren’t that hard at all and there are not many athletic people on the team. The cross country and track team at my school is one of the best in the area. It is very hard for people to make the varsity team and you go out and run 70+ miles a week and tell me how easy it is.

So my point is that every sport is difficult if you put effort into it and IMO all sports are equal if you work hard. Admission officers would probably not rank sports and just see how dedicated and involved you are or how successful you are and it wouldn’t matter what sport it is. The only time it would is if you are being recruited.

If you are recruited by colleges for track and/or cross country, that is definitely a good thing. You’ve demonstrated a signficant talent there. On the other hand, at my school at least, track and cross country are no-cut sports where the “geekier” kids can participate under low pressure situations. Not much student interest. Nothing really wrong with that, but just about everyone gets a letter and its basically a joke. The cut sports – baseball, basketball, hockey are the sports where the real athletes shine. Just my HS though.

At my school everyone participates but they get junior varsity letters… it is difficult to make the varsity team. Top 7 on a team of 60.
