Majored in Ancient Greek at W&M.

Knew I was going to law school so I could major in whatever I wanted. Many of my classes were the same 10 people and professor sitting around a table translating and discussing. It was wonderful!

My major: Comparative Literature
My first job out of college: library clerk/manager for a small patent law firm’s library.

I was the only one working in the library. They insisted I sign “Head Librarian” under my name on correspondence, but - I did not have a MLIS at that time.

Basically, I did acquisitions, research, copied patents at the Chicago Public Library, did inter-library loans, filed inserts, cataloged all of the existing and incoming books and files (the place was an unorganized mess when I got there), met with publisher sales reps, and they taught me how to do online research back in the early 90s. I also translated the occasional French document that came in.

That firm started having financial problems and after three years, I was let go amidst some staff cuts. :frowning: I got a job for one year as a front-desk receptionist at another patent law firm, then got married and went back to school to get a Master’s of Library and Information Sciences.

I worked as a receptionist at another general law firm for one year while attending grad school.

My second year of grad school I was a part-time reference assistant at Illinois Institute of Technology’ Naperville branch.

After that, I worked a temp job for the American Bar Association for six months, indexing and abstracting journal articles for their database.

After graduating, I got a job as a reference librarian at a suburban public library and worked there for two years, full-time, then after my daughter was born, worked there for two years, part-time.

I quit to stay home with my daughter (my salary and her daycare was a “wash”). I always thought I’d go back to work, but never did.

MY HUSBAND:

His major: Electrical Engineering
He worked at Western Electric (are they even still around?) in the mid-80s, for a few years, then…

He went to law school to be a patent attorney.

He’s been a patent attorney since.

Several family members:
Degree: mechanical engineering, first job: youth pastor, currently: IT—decided by the time the degree was finished that working in a cubicle didn’t sound fun. Still does some CAD on the side and is a born engineer, just not as a job.

Degree: biochemistry and cell biology (pre-med), went to pharmacy school instead, is now a pharmacist. Loves it, and is great at it.

Degree: economics, first job: retail management, later transitioned to stay-at-home parent

Degree: Biblical studies, worked in college administration, publishing, for a pension company, and now pursuing music, which was the original childhood dream anyway.

Great thread! I always tell my DDs and their friends that they should study something they love because odds are they will be doing something completely different anyway career-wise…

My undergrad. major: Marketing and MIS
My graduate major: International finance

My first job: head of AP for a retail chain
Current job: real estate project manager for affordable housing projects
