What would you do if... (medical billing)

@pizzagirl, yes, I would not send a package at my own expense but I WOULD send a letter and spend 47¢ on a guy I don’t know . I would not identify myself or put my return address on it; just a note saying" I got this mixed in with mine. Here ya go."

Similarly, I mailed someone’s wallet found on a hike to the address on the driver’s license. Did he still live there IDK. But I gave it a shot.

I wasn’t OUTRAGED, but my first thought was to send R’s info to R and was SURPRISED that no one else seemed to think of that.

@Himom, I would send the info anonymously so not “contacting” him … but he SHOULD be worried about a stranger getting his info… which was the point of sending it to him.

eso, I would have turned the wallet in to the police, and let them contact him.

Receiving my medical bill in the mail from a private party wouldn’t creep me out any less if it was sent anonymously.

I don’t know. Sometimes, I think it’s kinder not to scare people about info I’ve inadvertently received than have them constantly looking over their shoulder.

The other day, I got a letter and form from my insurer asking me about the SSN for baby HImom! I was upset and immediately called my insurer for more info, as our babies are in their mid-late 20s. It took a few days to sort out but it’s fine. (We were victims of the Anthem security breach and have been working in coverage for D for some months, so I was wondering if this related to either of those.

I prefer not being unduly alarmed about strangers getting my bills–but I guess some folks would prefer to know and get mailed the bill from the stranger?

I think I’m agreeing with those who suggest letting it drop (still calling the office to let them know). What R doesn’t know shouldn’t hurt him. He has enough going on medically that he doesn’t need more mental stuff on top of it, and since I don’t know him (other than name and address), it’s not really any different than anyone on here sharing medical info. In a couple of months time I doubt I’ll even remember his name.

If I regularly got other people’s bills in with mine it would be different, but this was the first time. I’ll chalk it up to a minor mistake and hope it was a one time deal overall.

Then I’ll hope that anyone who might receive my bills also doesn’t know me… or maybe that they won’t notice the name change and will just pay them!

These bills are usually sent by a third party printer and mailer company. We outsource ours as well. I could easily see the folding machine grabbing two and folding and stuffing them together. A human probably didn’t even see it.

@eyemamom If this were a regular bill, I’d agree with you. That would even make sense as to why we always get the wrong type if they have it on “automatic” somewhere. However, this is a bill we called and personally requested - different than usual type (for this medical group). I suspect this was handled by a person who pulled stuff from a printer and didn’t check to see that they had grabbed two (each more than one page). Mine was on top. R’s was underneath.
