It would also be good if she became familiar with at least one style guide, as it’s easier to learn a second one if you know one already. Either MLA or APA is a good choice. MLA if she thinks she’ll be a humanities major; APA is better for social sciences and sciences. If she’s truly undecided, she should just pick one. I started out with MLA in high school and quickly learned APA (and elements of a couple other styles) in college - it really doesn’t matter.

Ds went to writing intensive HS magnet but they used Chicago style (?) so she had to learn another style.

Agree on the ease of picking up different citation formats. During my stints in HS, undergrad, and grad school, I ended up using Chicago heavily with MLA not coming in too far behind.

While the MLA is popular among those in the English lit and some humanities fields and the APA popular among psych and some social science fields, the Chicago style is still heavily used in the field of politics and some areas of history.
