What your college junior and senior should be doing over winter break

Senior son has secured his first post graduation job already–in Taiwan. He got it on his own through his sources/connections.

Summer after junior year? Solo traveled through Singapore, Cambodia and Malaysia for a month on his own nickel. Upon his return he had set up a non-field related job that paid well.

I hope he is going to “chill” over Winter break. Seems reasonable.

I agree that by a college student’s junior year, hopefully it is time for a parent to STAND DOWN. Learn to love the kid off the couch and on to planning, implimenting and liviing his own life.

Blossom - Amen!

DD has had a number of interviews for some very competitive positions and made it to the final round and came up empty. She has three jobs that she will hear about in January.

In the meantime, she will act as though she will not be hired for those three jobs and continue to apply for jobs.

I agree with having a ready response for those who inquire. And you don’t have to confess to the jobs you didn’t land. She got two terrific emails from people who turned her down that essentially said it was just an unbelievably competitive pool.

I also second the idea of describing as specifically as possible what you would like to do because you just never know who might have something for you.

Ironically, DH is a director of a non-profit program that hires recent college grads for a two year stint. He cannot hire our D, nor would she want to work for daddy. However, he has told her sometimes his choices are pretty arbitrary, and some great candidates are not hired.

Yeah, me too. Looking forward to this conversation. Been thinking about this a lot recently. Never bothered to ask. My bad. Probably too focused on the process and not the ultimate goal.

Or, in my case, not at all. At least not recently.

I am sleeping for a week straight over break so I don’t fail my last semester, I’m so exhausted if I didn’t have a break coming anyway I’d hospitalize myself. I only get about a week and a half off.

That said, I have about six different completed resumes that I am updating all the time (writing resumes is a bit of a hobby of mine), and I am working on establishing the connections necessary to get a job in my intended field all the time and developing relevant experience. I am going to get the stuff I need from home while I am there to start getting ready for my court reporting certification test so that no matter what I will have a job guaranteed upon graduation, and I’ll be able to work from home until I can save up for a car (there is no public transit). If I land a better offer first then that’ll just be a back up to fall back on, but at least I have the security of knowing my bills will be paid no matter what.

So I think I can afford to take that week to sleep. I am not sure what else I could be doing at this point.
