'Whatever' so totally tops most annoying word poll

I hate that I hear myself saying “no problem” all the time. I don’t know when that happened. I annoy myself. I really hate “Your point is well taken” especially when you know they don’t agree with you at all.

“Whatever” always makes me think of the Female Dictionary. LOL

[Female Dictionary](<a href=“Female Dictionary | PDF”>Female Dictionary | PDF)

No offense intended. I don’t use the words in the definition, but I admit to using “whatever.”

Listened to a couple of teenage girls once and tried to count the number of times “like” was used in the conversation. Couldn’t, as both girls talked at the same time and used “like” I swear like  every other word.

Although I am partial to Yul Brynner and his “et cetera, et cetera, et cetera” in The King and I.

I can’t stand the word “humongous”. I don’t know why.

If you dislike “humongous”, then you ought to really hate “ginormous”. Well, I do, anyway.

Overwhelming…i cannot stand that word

“No problem” in place of you’re welcome bothers me more than “whatever” does.

Another word I can’t stand: “plethora.” What an awful and pretentious word to suddenly leap out of obscurity into common use.

I’m not nearly as intolerant or judgmental as this list is going to make me sound:

“Not so much” This is currently #1 for me. I don’t know why it bothers me so much.

“Spot on”

“That said” (I’m sure I have used this one, myself, especially in writing, but don’t care for it).

Couple (instead of “couple of” -I know it’s considered acceptable by some sources for informal speech and writing, but nobody I know says this - maybe it’s regional).

“thinking outside that infamous box”

anyways (anyway doesn’t bother me nearly as much, probably because I use it a lot, myself)

“change out” or “switch out” as in I’m going to change out that lightbulb (what the heck is wrong with “change” or “switch”?)

“It is what it is” Ditto what everyone else has said.

“Chill” (similar to “whatever” in effect)

“How great (or awful, or insert other word here) is that?” instead of “Isn’t that great?”

not sure if anyone here can relate to this but I hate when someone answers a question or starts a sentence by saying:

“so…”

It is rampant at my place of employment. Every sentence!!!

and of course the old standby… “in my personal opinion”

Middle aged men and women declaring that something sucks is repugnant.

At the risk of sounding arrogant, I’ll say that I hate “in my humble opinion” or “IMHO.” It sounds so Uriah Heep-ish!
I much prefer “ultimately” to “at the end of the day.”
I dislike “It is what it is.”

oh, sorghum - I say tippy top sometimes. I thought that tip top was the adjective form and tippy top was the noun!

As in, “You must be in tip top shape to climb to the tippy top of the mountain.”

Once I asked my husband if he wanted white wine or skim milk with the chicken we were having for dinner, and he said “whatever,” I poured him a glass with half of each. Well, I didn’t really. But I had an urge to. ;)

You read my mind!!! I have a meeting tomorrow with two guys (one from Texas, one from Oregon…could it be a western thing?) who do this, and I can’t stand it.

Well, that bites. :)

I once worked with a woman who said “penultimate” when she meant “ultimate”. People who use a big word because they think it makes them sound smart, but they use the word incorrectly…well, they suck.

It bugs me when people say “litrally” instead of “literally”. I have a co-worker who says “litrally” way too often on a daily basis.

One of my personal projects is to promote my new word, “monstrobulous” to take the place of both of those.

I actually think “ginormous” is a great visually accurate adjective. No problems with this one.

Whatever4:

Ha ha ha!!! My laugh of the day. I’m easily amused.

I’m not often ahead of the curve on things, but I have hated “whatever” for at least 20 years :D

And I love ginormous. It’s one of my seldom used but really-fun-to-use words.

I’ve never heard this except in British movies. I’m afraid I would consider it an affectation and think anyone barmy who said such a thing. Oops, did I say that?

“Also, too” is on my list. Redundant and Palinesque.

That said, I am a valley girl, from the original valley of valley speak (San Fernando) in the '70s, so I come by that vocabulary, and especially the intonation, organically. In grad school, one of the guys called me Val. Did it bother me? No. And the valley girl still tends to emerge on a fairly regular basis.

What is amusing is that my daughter’s midwestern schoolmates sound pretty much as valley as I do.
