what's the deal with the ranking?

Eng_dude I think you misunderstood my point about Peer Ranking. Most professionals in Texas and surrounding states have in fact heard of Tufts. That is, they know the name. They just don’t know very much about it. The general population has never even heard of it. I assume this would extend to school administrators. “No-name” state schools in TX, MS, and MO will probably not give Tufts high PR rankings because they know nothing about it, even though some may have heard the name. For the record, I think Tufts is also poorly placed to rate these schools. Everyone I’ve talked to from Georgetown, MIT, BU, BC, Cornell, and Dartmouth knows about Tufts and has a high opinion of it, with the possible exception of certain people on this forum. Also, if you’ve noticed, Peer Review seems to be biased towards large public schools.

Tufts is extremely well known and well-regarded in roughly the northern quarter of the US, as well as in parts of the west coast. In between, most people don’t know about it.

It’s obvious that you have issues with Tufts. Would you care to tell us how you came to have such a negative opinion of the school?
