What's Up with these Students?

^Yes, to me the comparison with Reid’s comments show the true editorial slant of the paper. The context of the two communications have nothing to do with each other. The apology is spoiled for me as it is clearly following the Republican line of trying to make Reid’s comments somehow more egregious than they are.

Reid’s private comment may be viewed as a dis on Obama’s audience adaptation techniques, changing his speaking style to connect with certain audiences. I don’t see how he was dissing blacks by giving an blunt assessment of the unfortunate current reality in public attitudes and politics, which many African-Americans have publicly written about.

The off-color joke in the paper though, is so offensive precisely because of its public context. I mean, I’ve heard worse jokes of that nature made by gay friends, whom I’m sure might repeat this one in private (if it happened to be funny) but would never condone it in print.

I’m not really interested in looking at the cartoon. I’m sure it’s horrible. On the topic of Harry Reid, obviously he is not a racist. But his comment displays archaic stereotyping. I personally do not believe there is such a thing as a “Negro dialect.” If I hear a person speaking on the phone or on the radio, I honestly cannot tell their race. African Americans have all sorts of accents or absolutely no discernible accent- depending on where they are from, how their parents spoke, etc. Just like everyone else.

I believe Reid’s comments display anachronistic attitudes.

Ds applied sight-unseen at ND and was accepted. I have to tell you, this makes me want to take it straight off the list. :(

^^Visit the campus, first. This is not the opinion of most students on campus.
